I have a prospective buyer in California who is interested in
purchasing my M49 no dash. The gun shipped in Jan of 1983 and has a product code of 102002. No box or docs.

I told the buyer to make sure it was legal for California. He
checked with his local FFL and was told the FFL couldn't find
the Model number listed on the approved list and suggested
he obtain a SKU from the seller as then it would be very easy
to do a search.

I contacted S&W customer service for a SKU number and was
told the revolver is so old a SKU number could not be obtained
and to contact S&W Historical Foundation since they have a
lot more data than the manufacturer has.

Since I'm a member that sounded like a good idea. Can you
help me obtain a SKU number?

Regards,
Richard Sirianni

I would have thought a Stock Keeping Unit number could vary from vendor to vendor, but then I've never been much of a businessman...Especially a California one...However the gun is listed by product code here in the 1991 catalog......Ben

EDIT: This site will not allow the URL for the PDF...

The only M49-class revolver currently on California's Certified for Sale Roster is the 649-5, SKU 163210. Your M49 is not on the Roster and cannot be legally brought into California at this time unless the purchaser is a law enforcement officer in this state. It would be up to him to establish his right to import that gun with his receiving FFL before you could ship it (or have your FFL ship it).

When the gun reaches the age of 50 -- Jan 2033 -- it will become a curio or relic. At that time (barring revised import prohibitions by the California Legislature in coming years) it will be legal to import into California by anyone who qualifies as a legal gun owner or buyer in this state.

I am afraid your proposed sale into California is not possible at this time unless the proposed buyer is employed in law enforcement. If there are other special circumstances that would allow its import, I am not familiar with them.
