new 25 round 15-22 magazine

something i've been pondering...

when i insert my mag into the rifle it doesn't seem to fit very tight. it actually rattles a bit if i shake the rifle (which happens alot as i run through the mall on security detail:D). i think i might try to add some epoxy or resin to the outside of the mag to try to tighten the fit. i want to see if it will have any effect on function.

do the rest of you notice the same thing with your mags?

if i have the time tonight i'll attempt it and try to remember to post some pics.

edit: after writing this i added two small pieces of electrical tape to the front of the mags. they are snug as hell now. no movement at all. a bit tight to insert and they don't drop without some assistance but we'll see how the rifle functions like this first before unalterably adding to my mags.

I didn't realize the springs had the same amount of coils in them. I have the 25 and 10 new from S&W and the 25 round spring is already compressed more.

mine are a little loose also, if you don't notice an improvement I would also try moving the tape to a different side of the mag. by placing the tape in different spots it may change the angle of the mag when in the gun giving the bullet a better angle of approach to the chamber.

no difference other than more of a snug fit for the mag. i added epoxy to the front of mag A. mag B got epoxy on the front and back. mag C got one piece of electrical tape on the front. mag D got 2 pieces. mag E was stock.

got one FTF with mag D and one with mag A. reloaded both with the same ammo and fired of 25 rounds rapid with no issue.

i don't think the addition of epoxy or tape to snug up how tightly the mag fits in the well has any effect of function. i would have shot more but my f'n new red dot wasn't sighting in for some reason and when combined with the balmy 20 degree temps and a furnace on the fritz, i called it quits early.

i do really like how the mags don't rattle in the gun anymore. i'm going to sand the epoxy off mag A and B and just go with the clean and easily removable electrical tape.

just got my new mags and other than the 25 rnds on the side they are exactly the same...as the original

Load em up with about 15-20 rounds and stand them up against each other and take a pic and post it. Did you have problems ever with your 1st mags? mag snags? If so, would it be possible that you mark your new ones and give us a range report? Did you look carefully at the mags were talking mm's here. ;)

hey, what teck-neek did you use to take the mags apart???????

Just got my 2 free mags in the mail today and there are some slight differences I found.

The mag with the red follwer is the original 25 round mag. The blue follower in the new 10 round mag seems to stick a lot further than the red one.

I also took it apart and noticed the new mags have a longer spring in them.

I hope this helps the common problems with this rifle.

I just got my mags from 44mag.com they say 22lr on them. How do you get the springs inside the gun?

is it just me or do the ones with the blue follower not have the pull down buttons on them ?

"is it just me or do the ones with the blue follower not have the pull down buttons on them?"

You are correct -- but we have ID'd a cheap and easy fix for that.

Just search for my "DIY" post on mag follower buttons, last updated late in February.

I just got off the phone with S&W. I finally got around to calling about the "mag snags". I was told that there IS a difference in the 22lr. and the 22lr.-25rd. marked mags. The old 22lr. mags cause the infamous "mag snags" and are being replaced on a "case by case basis". They are backordered for quite a while but if you're having rounds get stuck in the mag and smashed by the bolt call S&W. They will replace the old mags.

They replaced three of my mags as well as the recoil spring and hammer spring. It also looks like the bolt is new, but I won't swear to it.
I do think the problem is solved for me. I did 275 rounds of Federal Bulk and 100 MiniMags with no failures of any kind. This would not have been the case prior to repairs when I was getting 3 or 4 failures per mag on average.
