Might be able to pick one of these (6946) up for around $400. Are these guns rare? How many were made? And is this a fair price? Thanks.

$400 strikes me as warm. There were an awful lot of these DAO 6906-variants produced for cops, and they flooded the used market a few years back for $250 or so.

Nice guns, though. I only sold mine because the fellow who'd sold it to me during hard times asked for it back.

I have a 6946 good little gun and at least it is all metal. Paid 275.00

Be safe

I got mine a few monthes back for 400 otd with a box, paper work and two mags. Wish I could of found one for what Erich paid. I am very happy with it. No problem good shooter nice to winter carry.

I had a 6946 as an issued duty weapon for a while. I have to say, of all the Smith 3rd Gens I've shot and owned over the years, the 6946 was the only one I didn't like. It was probably mostly just the example I had, but the trigger was awful (and I usually love the pre-TSW DAO), it was unreliable, and the finger rest magazines felt flimsy and the springs, even in new mags, always felt weak to me.

I'd pass based on my experience, but I am sure there are better examples of the 6946 out there than the one I had. $400 does seem steep in any case.

I would handle it before buying.

One of the nicest DAO triggers I have experienced was on a 6946.

Then I bought one. It had the WORST DAO trigger that I ever tried.

It would have cost over $250 to have it tuned at Novaks. Instead, I sold it at a $100 loss and kept moving on.

Not rare, Greentops in Richmond VA recently had three of them, tradeins from power company guards. I think they were $400@. There was recently one FS on the Carolina Shooters forum, don't remember exactly the price but it was under $400. Hope this helps some...

Greentop in Ashland, VA is where I got my like new example 6946 last year, with 2 magazines for $275.00. ALWAYS offer Greentop 10%, or more, less than their asking price on used pieces...

Right now the days of the $275 smith auto is gone here in Florida. Unless it's a really beat up LE trade in.
If they are in nice shape they are $400 and UP.
Which is really where they should be anyway compared to Glocks and Sigs selling for 500-700 bills.
I would buy it in a second at that price if it was 98% with a couple of mags.
What else ya gonna buy for $400 bucks that's nice?

6946's are getting rarer every day, relatively speaking, because they haven't been in the S&W catalog for several years. They were fairly popular police guns back in "the day". Check Shotgun News, Gun Digest, AuctionArms.com, Gunsamerica.com, and Gunbroker.com. The 6944 (blued) is significantly harder to find. If you want a "NIB" DAO S&W, the 3914DAO and 5946 are still made for the NYPD (and probably other agencies, too). A word of caution, though. The alloy-frame S&W's are great when they are new, but they don't hold up long-term. Change recoil springs frequently, and avoid +P ammo if possible. "No-Buy" danger signs include chipped extractors and broken trigger play springs. If you look carefully, you should be able to find one with lots of "life" left in it. Some interesting LE variants were produced, including 6946's with early square trigger guards, and 6946's with laser etching on the top of their slides to reduce glare.
