I have been reading on a couple of other posts concerning a U mark. The posts say that S&W applied that to used guns that they sold. My 1076 (waiting on the Jinks letter) has this on the underside of the trigger guard. Do any other lettered 1076's have this mark?

Would you mind posting a picture? I am not familiar with that mark. I have a 1076 that I am also currently waiting on a letter for with the upside down "T" on the front side aspect of the side of the trigger guard. Anyway. hopefully DMC will chime in on this one.

I've tried, but I can't seem to get a clear picture. It is a capital U stamped right in the middle of the underside of the trigger guard.

I have a 1076, 4516 and 4536 both with the "U" under the trigger guard. The lable on the box has used printed on it. From what I have been able gather these are factory trade-ins that S&W has gone thru.

Steve, nearly every lettered FBI 1076 I have bears the "u" mark. That it may stand for "used" is the first I've heard but it makes sense and hope it is true. One more 1076 mystery solved. As for the upside down "T" or "1" unfortunately I don't have a clue. Dave

Thanks Dave. I hope to have the Jinks letter any day now. Do you have a source for when my gun was shipped? # TFP-2182. Thanks

I've been told twice by S&W reps over the phone that the "U" indicated that the factory had inspected the gun for safe function after being returned by LE Agencies as trade-ins for new S&Ws. The guns then went out to selected distributors for resale. Hope this helps.

Jerry

My 1076 has the same U and the box is marked "Used" so that may be the explination

I too have a 1076 that I am 99.9% sure will letter as an FBI pistol. My letter is due anyday. My gun has neither the U marking or T marking.Besides that is does not have any warning on the slide.dmc8163 I sent you pictures of the case we discussed and the pistol.Does anyone have any ideas regarding the lack of markings. It also comes with an original box marked FBI.Thanks

FBI 1076

I have a documented FBI 1076 (letter by Jinks, serial # TEU01XX) that does not have the letter "U" stamped on the underside of the trigger guard. It does have the 2 dots under the decocker lever. Mine went to the FBI in 1990 and returned to S&W in 1992. It was then shipped to Lew Horton in 1994. After a few journeys, I had the luck to acquire it a few years back. It was a real beater when I got it. However, I returned it to S&W to do a complete overhaul with new sights (not night sights), grips (straight, which I prefer) and a metal refinish, just like it came out of the factory in '90, as the FBI originally received it (or close to it). One of my prized S&W's now. Anyway, sorry for the long story, I couldn't contain my joy!

"T" marking

I just posted in the FBI 1076 thread found about 15 threads down the letter I just got this week from Mr. Jinks where he refers to the "T" or "1" marking on the trigger guard. I simply asked him about it in my letter request and he answered. I attached pics of my letter. Look at the last sentence of the second page. I will attach it here as well.

Dave from PA,
I can't wait until you receive your letter. Your 1076 is extremely interesting. And no proof marks??? I'll reserve comment on that until shi date is determined. Thanks bad man one. Parrotdog you should request a letter. It seems likely your 1076 is an FBI pistol.
