16-4 question..................

was trying to gather more info on these guns ,the 16-4 in the 32 H&R Mag caliber that came out in 1989....and are now ( 3 years later??)discontinued...any "ideas/thoughts or info" as to the numbers of each barrel length made?? see they made 'em in 4 in ., 6-in and 8 3/8-in...with a full "underlug"...................
I ask this as we do NOT recall seeing many ever for sale at any of the local gun shows, and no-one has been able to answer the questions.......
Talked with Lee a bit and he seems to think the interest is down on them lately, but with only 8800 of them made according to the Vol 3 book, oh well.......

I've only seen them on auction sites and forum BST areas. Never once at a show or shop.

I bought mine at a gun show way back in March 1990. It is a 6" and was new in box from a dealer whose shop was in Davenport, IA. My best recollection is these were very slow sellers then. They now have a cultish following among members of this forum.

I can't help with how many of each length were made. I can tell you here in Indiana the 6-inch length was by far the most common. I suppose I have seen maybe a dozen or so. The model was actually pretty popular for a while with varmint hunters. I bought one for indoor target shooting with .32s. It was such a great gun I bought a spare, which I never used, and ended up selling recently. The one I shoot is very accurate, and I have never heard another owner complain about one.

I have seen only one 8-inch gun, and maybe two or three 4-inchers.

I think internet prices are probably down, in general, but really don't follow prices closely. It always seems like anything I want... the prices are still pretty lively!

I have been trying to corner the market on 16-4's, must have 8 of them. All except the first one were bought on this forum. I passed them to my kids. I have never seen one at a gun show or gun shop.
I think the revolver is great, very accurate but awful heavy. I also got a basketful of 631's 632' 331's and 332's.
I bought a model 66 last year, after 40 years of shooting. Funny thing is I still have not shot it!!

I bought my 4" LNIB 16-4 on an auction site last year, and I have seen one 6" in a shop. According to the book, the 4" and 8-3/8" barrels were discontinued a year before the 6", which would support the idea that the 6" is the most common version.

My 16-4 is the most accurate revolver I own, period. I also have 631's and 632's in .32 magnum.

It's not nice to tease people with only peaks at the grips on that one in the back. Guess it's easier than digging it out for a retake, though.

My only experience with the 16-4 is another story. I was buying a four inch one night as the clock was winding down on an auction site when a friend from the forum emailed me and asked if I would be interested in a six inch 16-4 at a great price. I handled the situation wrong. Guess I should've asked him if he could hang onto it for awhile or something.

Told him I was buying the elusive 4" and didn't have the money for both, so would have to pass. Been kicking myself in the 6" full lug butt ever since. I simply love prelock blue S&Ws with six inch barrels.

I had posted before that when my 4 inch came along I had never seen one. 25 years of shows and stopping in every gun shop I saw. I guess I got lucky.

I bought an anib 6" at a gun show last fall, it was the first one I had ever seen for sale. At $1000 otd I probably paid to much for it but I wasn't about to let it pass!
