Hi everyone, Im looking for an extractor for a S&W 1917 but coming up with nothing so far. So I was wondering if there are any interchangeable extractors from other models and any other parts just in case I run into this problem in the future. I have the extractor but the extractor rod snapped half way threaded with the center pin and spring inside the shaft. I plan on cutting the center pin and unthreading the broken extractor rod with a bit through the center as i read on another thread on here. Im open to any ideas thanks.

Me thinks that it would have to be either a 1917 or a Brazilian extractor, though it is possible that a .38 or .44 extractor could be modified to fit. After all, it has to fit a .45 ACP cartridge.

Why cut the center pin to unthread it? There's a keyway in the extractor shaft to keep it from turning even if the extractor star is broken off. It's a right hand thread just FYI.

If that's not helpful, I'm open to a better description of the damage.

Sending a PM also.

Extractors are hand fit to the cylinder and hand. You may find one that will fit right in, but my limited experience is that it is not so easy. It would be better to repair yours if possible. Is the rod stuck in the extractor?

I can't visualize it from your description and pictures.

Yes about a 1/3 of the extractor rod threads are stuck inside the extractor shaft I was trying to tighten the extractor rod to fix sticking it was seized up half way tightened and ended up snapping off.

I see the problem now, his extractor shaft with star is not broken, the front rod has broken off inside the star shaft.

To access the threaded end of the rod that's still threaded into the shaft, the center locking pin needs to be cut. Then drill out some of the pin and the remaining piece of extractor rod and/or insert an easy-out to turn out the broken off threaded end. A delicate process to be sure. If the rod was seized enough to snap off, saving the threads inside the extractor star shaft is not likely though.

I doubt if a thread tap is available to clean up those unique threads. They're .183" O.D. with a rapid twist and a fine 50-56 TPI.

Beararms,

Yes it would be imperative to me; it's serial #'d to the gun!

On the rear face of the star I notice that the star has two cut outs which appear to be for a spanner wrench. The shaft may unscrew from the shaft. If so, you can remove the pin and drill out the shaft or just replace the shaft.

I was thinking the same thing even if I was to successfully remove the broken threads would the extractor shaft threads be good for the new rod I ordered from Poppert's by the way thanks. It only came out to $18 bucks total.

I noticed it but didn't know what it was there for or what tool to use thought about using a pair of pliers but didn't want to cause further damage. I'm going to look into that Spanner wrench Sears carries it.

It's quite simple to make your own spanner wrenches; just file a notch in the center of a screwdriver blade tip of the correct thickness and width.

Soak the star in Kroil or similar penetrant 1st. The shaft may have a slight crimp on the spanner nut to keep it from unscrewing in normal use, so it make take a little effort to unscrew.

Alright I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.
