22 CB ammo

Anyone shoot 22 CB in a 617 or other revolver?? Do they work? Quiet?? Accurate???

I have shot quiet (22cb) in all my 22 firearms. Just won't cycle semi's.

My preferred round for shooting ground squirrels out the bathroom window..

I have shot some in my .22 Ruger GP100. They are a lot quieter than regular ammo but out of a short handgun barrel they are much louder than an air rifle. Out of my CZ 452 rifle with a 22.5 inch barrel they are about the same noise level as an air rifle.

It is harder to notice out of a handgun but CB caps are usually the most inaccurate .22 ammo you can buy in most guns. I have heard CCI quiet is just as quiet and much more accurate but have not been able to find any to try. CCI quiet uses a 40 grain bullet instead of 29 and is the same length as a regular 22 but like a CB cap is rated at 700 fps. If you can find that I buy it over CB caps.

A friend gave me some reloading pieces he found while cleaning out his garage and a box of cci's must have been old ,sticker said 1.95 . tried them out of my model 17 worked ok didn't check accuracy. Have some left to run through my Henry

I have a box of .22 CB. They are difficult to find, and .22 short is even more difficult. I usually use CCI snake shot shells in my model 63 for such things.

I use them in my 617 to dispatch animals I have caught in live traps. I find them to shoot very low past ten yard, might be partly because I have a red dot sight. Point blank they are very effective. In a rifle I really like the Remington CBee's as they are accurate out to 25 yards and the hollow point really opens up.

I have shot a lot of the CB Long rifle in my 22 conversion for my AR. At air rifle distance they are incredibly accurate.


I haven't shot any of the CCI Quiet, but my preference for a quiet round has always been subsonic rounds as they have a bit more effective range.

If you ever come across the original CB caps, "Acorn" by RWS in Germany, grab them! A triangular bullet 15 grains in weight, IIRC, with a case shorter than our Short case. No powder, just the priming mixture. VERY quiet in a rifle bbl. I was able to group them in a rifle at 20 feet.

Pretty much anything will be noisier in a handgun bbl than in a rifle.

I use Remington CBee ammo all the time on my ranch. About as loud as a good pellet rifle but a lot more powerful. Out of a handgun I use them on rabbits squirrels, etc. Out of a rifle the farthest I have tried is about 70 yards. At that distance I get about 8" of drop.

CCI Quiet 22's are the best caps. . .very accurate. The Remington CBee's are OK, but accuracy is not as good. I shoot them anyway.

About 15 years ago I picked up a brick of Aguila Colibri ammo. 20-grain bullet, no powder charge (just the priming compound). Have used those in several handguns (revolvers and semi-autos) with good results on nuisance critters at close range. Very quiet (less noise than my old .177 air rifle).

Will not cycle semi-autos. Not recommended for rifles (danger of bullet lodging in the bore).

The Colibri is more like the BB caps. Aguila also made the Super Colibri, more like the CB caps.

I have found a huge difference between shooting reduced power rounds from a rifle and from a pistol. From a rifle the CCI quiets are pretty quiet. But from a pistol, the only rounds that I have found to be quiet are the Aguila Colibri rounds. And the Colibri rounds really are very weak, something like 20 grains at 400 feet per second, which is 7 foot pounds of energy. For comparison, the CCI quiets are the strongest of the reduced power loads; they are 40 grains at 710 fps for 45 foot pounds of energy.

Not sure if it was leading, but with the CB's in my bolt action Marlin 25, you kept a group for about one mag or 7 shots. If you did not clean the microgroove barrel after that, they went completely out of minute of squirrel.

Right before I moved, I started shooting the CCI quiet and did not notice any accuracy degradation in about 20 shots.

Both sounded about the same through a 16" barrel.

Thanks for the heads-up! The ones I bought in 1970 (!) came from a small sporting goods store no longer selling guns that still had some ammo for sale. IIRC, I paid $2 apiece for 2 boxes of 100 CBs. Shot them in the hallway of my apt. from a 24" rifle bbl with all rounds touching at 20ft. No louder than a cap pistol.

P.S. Just checked Midway's website. If you wanted to economize, you could wait for the BB caps. They're only .35 apiece!

Just remember that a Revolver has a Barrel Cylinder Gap where the gas escapes and so what would normally sound like a pellet gun out of a .22 Rifle is still a bit loud indoors from a Revolver. Most semi autos won't cycle with lighter loads but can be fired single shot.

I actually find that out of a Rifle .22 shorts are quieter than CB Longs are. CCI's Quite .22's are also pretty good and they are still 40 grains! Again, from a Revolver it's hard to get anything truly quiet to the point you will not need ear protection indoors.

PS: I have a tin of the Acorn loads and a tin of Floberts that I inherited - but never fired.

The RWS acorn rounds and other CB cartridges I have shot in my K22 were effective for shooting rats ... but while making only a "snap" in a rifle they were a lot louder in the revolver ...

If I remember right these were some kind of compound that would basically become dust when they hit something. We used them in the barns to shoot pigeons, starlings, sparrows, and rats with great results. I wonder if they are still available, but bet there is no way a carnine would sell you some now.

I doubt that the .22 shooting gallery loads are still made, as I doubt there are any shooting galleries still around to buy them. The bullet is made of phenolic plastic and powdered iron, so it will break up on impact with a a steel plate, and also produce a few sparks to add to the excitement. Back in the 1950s, Remington sold those over the counter as the Remington "Rocket". Also sold under the Peters brand, but I don't remember what those were called. Sort of strange packaging - a flat pack of 28 rounds wrapped in cellophane.

Regarding CCI .22 CB shorts, the local Wal-Mart right now has probably a dozen boxes on their shelf, I think about $7 per 100 round box.
