.22 LR Shortage Is Over - NO WAY ! !

The gun dept manager at my local Gander told me that they had sold more 22 ammo in the first 6 months of last year than they sold all of the year before, in other words-they actually received more 22 ammo, it does not stay on the shelf. They stock shelves at random times to avoid the "regulars". The Dunhams manager told me that the same bunch sits at a coffee shop on Thursday mornings, looking out the window, spotting for the delivery truck. The closest Cabelas is about 4 hr drive, the clerk told me that when they get bricks that have 10 50rd boxes, they break them apart and sell only the 50 round boxes, limit 2.
My point, not manufacturing shortage-hoarders.

Hoarders, yes (as I've said in several posts describing bad days at WM), but also shooters. I've seen guys at the range blow through 1k rounds in a short afternoon, so honest consumption is one of the overall drivers.

If people were not looking for quantity, this situation would not exist. I've seen guys at Academy refuse to buy the two box limit because "there's no bulk". If I showed up, and the ammo, whatever type, would cycle my pistol, I would buy a box or two lest I have wasted the gas money.

Federal , CCI & Win. White box 9mm.
There is no question where I am going to spend most of my money.
But this is still America , for now anyway , & to each there own I say.
If manufacturers want to control supply I guess they can, I think we see it happening right now with oil.
My 15-22 is my fun gun , my pistols are for self defense , at this point I am adding to my supply of self defense ammo.
As long as the collectors of 22lr stay in bidding war the prices will stay high & supply will be limited IMO.

I ordered CCI Stingers over a year ago from Lohman Arms in Texas
I completely forgot about them they called me about a month ago said they came in, I figured I might as well get them knowing how hard they are to get but I paid for them 7.00 per 50 and 13.00 shipping I only use them in my Henry on the 100 yd. range cheaper rounds in everything
else I don't understand how they figure shipping charges I just ordered 2000 bullets from Extreme bullets and the shipping was just 5.00 if I remember correctly 500 9 mm's weigh about 12 lbs

Many things factor into the cost of shipping. The store can either subsidize it (free, flat rate, sales-price-based or reduced cost shipping), pass it along directly (they charge what they get charged) or make money off it (they charge more for "handling").

The cost to ship something is not fixed, either. Two warehouses side by side sending the same box to the same address via the same shipper likely do not pay the same rate to that vendor. If warehouse 1 does twice the volume as warehouse 2, they may only pay 50-80% of what the other does. (Ex: my father in law worked for a very large company and was allowed to use FedEx for personal shipments at the reduced rate negotiated by his large employer: 50% of list rates!) Now that warehouse that only pays half price MAY charge customers the full listed shipper rate, thus making money on shipping while appearing to charge shipper rates.

Ammo also cannot be shipped by the USPS (Post Office). The minimum "list price" to ship one pound across the country by UPS ground is something like $10-12. The heavier the box, the less PER POUND. If you live closer to the warehouse, you pay less when the warehouse charges actual rates. For me living in Washington State, shipping ammo at actual rate is usually a deal killer (most ammo distributors are back East). For me, fixed rate based on VALUE or flat-rate shipping works out best. You have to look at the TOTAL DELIVERED PRICE on anything to be sure you're getting the best deal. Free shipping or "ship to store" is awesome.

The fact that ammo must go ground UPS or FedEx is another reason why it likely cost more to ship than that big box 'o bullets. The bullets probably shipped in a USPS FLAT RATE box, so that 12 lbs of lead and copper could mail in a small "flat rate" box anywhere in the US for $5.95. 1 50-round box of 22 LR is under a pound, but still costs $10-12 "list price" to ship UPS ground.

I hope someone finds this information informative. : )

Think that's crazy, start reloading. I reload 9mm plinking ammo for $.10/round. Before the latest ammo craze I bought a couple .22s so I could plink on the cheap. Got a 500 round box. Things went crazy, got into reloading when some stuff could still be found. Just bought a 9mm upper so I could plink with that - gonna be cheaper than 22 for a good long time I guess.

I don't understand this. Shooting 9mm for .10/rd is a good deal, but it's still not cheaper than .22lr. I'm not sure where the ammo in the picture was purchased, but I've been very successful in buying .22lr for under .10/rd. If you put a little internet time in, you can even get mini-mags for under .10/rd including shipping.

Don't get me wrong, .10/rd for .22lr sucks, but for us non-reloaders, it's still the cheapest way to shoot and even with reloading, it's apparently close to even a little cheaper. Though I will admit, I'd rather shoot 9mm than .22lr but I don't reload.

Hi Jerry, The mini-mags came from the gun shop I use they were just less than $10 for 100 over with tax & the only place I have seen any for any price in a long time. I don't think they are much cheeper than that at WM. Was taking my Grandson to shoot & my 15-22 loves them so I was glad to find them even at .10.
The federal match was from a 325 box I gave $24.95 for.
I know if i put in the time I could save a little buying on line.
I just don't want to buy ammo on line, bunch of reasons, but mostly I told myself back when all the price gouging was going on that I would just not shoot before I would give them 1 cent.
My most fun shooting now is with my Grandson & I will pay a little more for that, but for my plinking I will not.
,
I was not really trying to compare 22lr to 9mm don't think you can. What I was saying is for my money when 22lr is even close to half the cost of 9mm I am going to stock up on the 9s, lot of reason for that as well not the least of which is keeping the Wife & myself trained & ready. Heck I've even found some Fed. 9mm for $9.97 box of 50.
,
I was just cleaning weapons & there was an odd 22 that got in my pistol bag laying there with some 9s & I thought the visual of seeing what I got for half as much for was worth sharing.
,
( I am adding this : I just for the heck of it went to the in stock thread looked at a lot on the last page & my prices are even a little low for most of them : - )
,
Happy plinking , be safe , have fun & thank God we live where we can collect as much as we want of what ever we want , well almost

I'm starting to think that the .22LR ammo crisis is NEVER going to end. Specially with Hillary in the horizon.

Its comments like this that put us here. Lets make sure we vote for the politicians that best care about our Civil Liberties. Hilary isnt on any radar of mine and she certanly isnt on any horizon I see.

Well all I know is that I don't have any problem her in Charlotte finding .22LR. This is from one store yesterday at 4pm. No mad lines, no people running around like the world is coming to an end. Just piles of CCI......that one rack there in the middle with all of the Mini Mags on it...they were stacked 4 deep behind the ones in the front. I think all together there was over 28,000rnds of Mini's on there. I idn't even buy any .....because I don't need any.

 I wonder if it will look like that in a ew days....

If my local Dicks gets ammo it goes slowly the bass pro right next door sells out in a few hours and the shelves start as well stocked as this one or better.

Cabelas on-line is a joke, with a one box limit. The shipping is almost as much as the ammo cost.

That is why one that shoots a bunch, such as me, just needs to watch the in stock ammo thread & wait for the occasions where you can order good stuff by the case. By the case, freight is much more reasonable than ordering 50 or even 500 at a time.

Last week Palmetto was listed as having a couple of different ones with no limit. I picked up a case of 5000 of my favorite, CCI Standard Velocity. They were $4.99/50 pack, so right at .10 which nowadays is a good price for really good ammo. It didn't go real quick either as I checked the following day & it was still available. I have also gone to Champion Shooters Supply & picked up a case of Norma Tac-22, which is just as good, or better than CCI SV. A few months back, they had inventory that lasted for weeks. It is not available now but you can get on a notify list. I believe they are expecting more soon.

I was at the same store and saw the ammo. I have plenty of 22 so I passed. But it was the first time I saw Mini Mags on any shelf with no limits. Not that $8.49 a box plus tax was any kind of deal. But it was nice to see ammo sitting on the shelf for a change.
