I asked a local gunsmith about rechambering a 6 shot K frame 22LR cylinder to 22 Mag.

The pistol started off life as a model 48, but at some point a 22LR cylinder was fitted and the original 22 Mag cylinder vanished.

My gunsmith didnt think it would work.

My amateur hack measurements said it should work.

Thoughts?

It will work fine - especially since the cylinder is already fitted to the frame. I reamed a 22LR Model 18 cylinder to 22 Mag to fit my Model 17. The most difficult part was fitting the cylinder to the frame. Works great now and is very accurate.

M48's were available with a .22LR cylinder to go with the magnum cylinder. That .22LR cylinder may be original to the revolver. Try looking for a .22MRF cylinder before altering that one. Barrel bore is the same for both.
