I got a Model 29-3 yesterday for $450, 8 3/8 barrel. The action is great but it does have some holster wear. Were all 29-3 built sometime in the 80's?

The serial number is A181X_ _ _, the X is part of the Serial number. The A18 is a larger stamp size than the 5 digits I assume that's part of the serial number correct?

Welcome to the forum. You got a good deal on that one.
The M29-3 started about 1982 and ended about 1988. That is not the serial number. You will need to take off the grips and look on the bottom of the grip frame to see the number. It could start with N or have 3 letters and 4 digits.

Thanks for the serial number info, it's my first S & W, my old Colt serial is on the crane and the frame. I'm on my way to the range to have a little fun.

I made it to the range today and it was a blast to shoot, I've always liked big bore weapons, not that crazy about the grips but I can change that easily enough. It's an accurate weapon once you relax, there's a little recoil.
