I just acquired a S&W .38 hammerless revolver in need of repair. The serial number is 202xxx. Can someone give me more information on this revolver. It is missing pieces inside for the trigger mechanism, I have an exploded parts view, but it does not show the location of the parts, so I don't know for sure what parts are missing. Does anyone have such a diagram, or can point me to one, I would be grateful. Any information on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you tried Numrich for the parts diagram? Did you take it apart? Can you post a photo of the parts you have?

I was using the Numrich diagram to identify the missing parts, but it does not show the location of the parts. From what I see the only parts inside are the hammer(20), trigger(38), and the firing pin assembly.

It is pretty tough to get a picture of the insides of any top-break that shows all the parts. I know of no cut-away drawings showing the mechanism. If I recall, there are over 60 parts in a 38 Safety and unless you follow a schematic, it would be difficult to determine what is missing.

Parts for these guns are getting tough to find. Even though there were over a quarter-million made, parts do not come up all that often. Even if you find a hammer for example, it may not fit the model you have since design changes were made. There are five models of 38 Safety revolvers. ebay is probably the best source, but many sellers do not know what they are selling and it is not uncommon for parts to be mis-identified. If your revolver is in very good condition, it might be worth it to find a beater out there within serial numbers 120,000 to 220,000 and salvage the parts you need.

I will add a photo of a working 38 Safety with the side-plate off. This is a 4th Model.

Hello Rich, Im looking at a very detailed view right now. On page 56&57 of an old NRA " Illustrated Firearms Assembly Handbook" Vol.1. I believe 1960. Sorry Rich, best I can do.

From the looks of it you are missing most of the flat type springs including the main spring and latch spring. The trigger spring is probably gone too. You would be better off parting out the rest of the gun and buying one all there. They are not that expensive.

Your gun is most likely from the May/June time frame of 1906.

I would have to agree with Tom on this as much as I like putting a gun back in service. I have a good functioning one that I only have about $125 in. You probably could sell your parts for at least $50 possibly more then look for one that is working. Of course I do not know how much you have in this one.
