.38 Special through a .38 S & W barrel?

No safety concern, .38 special is a .357 bore dia .38 S&W is .360. It may not be real accurate but it will work.

The problem will be that the bullet will be .004 smaller than the barrel. This is not good for the gun, or accuracy as the bullet will bounce down the barrel instead of being pushed along the rifling. I see serious problems in doing this.

Why not get a snub nose 38 special barrel? Am I missing something?

A few months ago, I posted a question of WHY I was getting such good accuracy out of my 1905 (4th) S&W .38 Special with its 5" .38 S&W barrel. I asked this question because I had just acquired the gun and it shot to a 50 foot point of aim with four different loads including 130 grain FMJ, 148 grain lead W/C, 158 grain lead and 158 grain FMJ. I don't know how old the barrel is but it has the half moon front sight. I did not get an answer to my accuracy question but I am very happy with my .38 Special/.38 S&W gun.

I've got a Victory that was butchered, I mean modified by Cogswell and Harrisson for cheap sales back to the US. The barrel was cut down to 3.5" and the chambers were reamed to accept .38 Special brass.

Well, you could put .38 Special brass into the gun, but the brass would bulge and was garbage after firing. There was also the possiblity of a ruptured case. I don't know how they ever managed to sell these guns.

To put the gun back in service, I picked up an old .38 Special cylinder and fitted it to the gun. It works fine now. Accuracy is very good (as good as you can ask for from a service gun) and I have not had any problems shooting this gun with the 0.004" overbore.
