38spl Ammo...Why So Much Junk?

NEVER but NEVER use reloads as self-defense ammo. They will rip you apart in court if you have to use one.

I do not understand this statement. As an attorney, a former prosecutor, it makes no sense to me. The issue is whether the use of force is justified. If so, it makes little difference what load you use. Seriously, it doesn't matter whether you loaded it yourself or bought it at Wal-Mart.

Not buying that in the case of 30 carbine 110gn SP, which has been made for 40+ years, and merely subs an SP bullet of the same weight and profile as FMJ...there are simply not enough hypothetical costs to justify the difference in price between their FMJ and SP loadings. As to how much is made, or how much the market wants...There is enough of a demand for foreign manufacturers to get into the market for a round they have no history with whatsoever. There is enough of a market for SD loads in the carbine for Hornady to design a completely new bullet and bring it to market.

Nicky 4968,
I am with you l00% even though I don't reload. I thoroughly believe in technological breakthroughs.....but when did lead rn ammo. stop doing the job. As far as that goes .22 cal., as far as I know still kills. As Erich (also on this forum) says, it is all about shot placement.
A lot of the other posts on the forum feel the way that we do also.
We have more to contend with in this day and time than yesteryear, drugs for example, but it is still "shot placement" that gets the job done. To end I'll say, sometimes it seem like a lot of hype has replaced common sense. I would be willing to bet that the members of gangs don't go through the suffering of "which round is best"....they just load up and go.
I respect the thoughts of others when it comes down to choice of ammo, but sometimes it seems like a sea of confusion to me.
God bless you and the "one you brung to the dance" my friend.

TPD 223,
It is out there, but who wants to go "PREPAID", how humiliating!
Have a good evening brother.

I really hate to jump into this but you can get the Federal "FBI" load for $18 per box of 50 at SGAmmo. He also has Federal 158gr SWC's for $13 per 50rnd box. For the record I reload and have no connection to SGAmmo except for buying from him.

There are certain forensic issues that could make things difficult in court. Personally, I think the issue is ~way~ overrated but I still carry factory loads. One less thing to worry about in court.

I just picked up 500 rounds of Speer Lawman Clean Fire 158 TMJ +P (advertized muzzle velocity 900fps) on GB for $130 SHIPPED. That's 26 cents a round. 'Bout as cheap as it gets. Good range ammo and, in a pinch, carry ammo. I think the demand (hence supply) isn't there for 38 Special carry JHP ammo anymore because.... drum roll please.... the majority of the armed population is carrying .357 Magnum, 9mm or .45ACP.
