40 cal shield

same here, and thanks for starting a "good" 40 shield thread:)

serious caliber in a small but controllable size, accurate, good trigger. this was the one i'd been waiting for......i'm wearing it right now.

if your mag falls out, put away the torch and pitchfork, pick up a hammer and a punch and you'll be good to go in 5 minutes, it's not rocket science:D

don't get me wrong, i'm not giving S&W a pass on this issue. i do, however, feel that they did so many things right with this pistol that i don't mind punching a little dimple myself if that's what it takes to keep the mag in place. of course S&W should have made that little dimple........shame on them:D

i'm amazed that folks are going to all the trouble of sending the pistol back for this easy-to-fix-yourself problem..........sorry, that's just my opinion and as always, to each his own. owners certainly have the right to send it back if they choose to do so.

I have posted many positive responses to other posts about the Shield 40. Mine is a great gun without problems through hundreds of rounds from several brands of ammo. It doesn't have the kick so feared by some. I pocket carry. I feels good in the hand. If some one doesn't like it, sell it and move on and don't bother the rest of us.

Shield in 40

Mine is incredible. I love it so much that I am on the waiting list for a 9mm Shield. I am number four on the list.
The Shield is incredibly accurate, reliable, easy to carry, and soaks up the recoil. What is not to like?

Amen! Couldn't agree more.

Great sidearm

3rd trip to the range today with .40 cal shield. Absolutely no issues after a total of 600 rounds. I practice at 25 and 50 foot ranges. I find around 40 feet the sweet spot, 2 to 3 inch groups at a rate of 1 shot every second. No issues with the magazines. I took the mags apart, field striped the weapon so I could see just how the mag catch grappled the notch on the mag. From the view inside of the mag, absolutely no way the mag could fall out. Maybe they have changed the design. I received my 40 just 2 weeks ago. As far as the recoil, my favorite sidearm is my Walther P99as in .40 and I have to say I don't think the recoil is any different. I will test next week side by side.

I agree on the positive reviews of the shield 40. bought one on an impulse when it was staring me in the face at a LGS. Shot it a couple of days ago. has great accuracy at distances Ill shoot; and the recoil isn't any worse than my other guns. ALL small framed compacts or subc's. IE G27, kel tec PF9, kimber tac ultra II (aluminum frame .45). I did shoot a little bit left like some others were saying, but I think its my hand placement or something in my grip. I concentrated a bit more and repositioned my hand and made sure I wasn't squeezing too hard, and was a bit more accurate with it. 7-10 yards, 2-3" groups with the majority of the holes touching. works for me.

I was expecting the mag drop problem, and it didn't show up in my 100+ rounds through it. maybe it will after another trip to the range, maybe not. Im not that worked up about it, if it does. Ill either dimple the mags myself, or send it back. as long as they fix it, if it needs; Im ok with that.

Best thing I can say about the gun is the price and feel, fit, and finish. wish they offered a factory night sight option, tho.

I looked at a bunch more guns today at another store, and for the cash; the only other gun that might be close in bang for the buck IMO is my kel tec. 225otd was a steal. BUT I might sell that, since I see myself using the shield for my edc. I like everything about the pf9, except it has a bit more play in the slide and frame fitment than I like. probably doesn't affect anything, accuracy or wear, but I hate that I can feel it wiggle around, lol.

Went into my LGS to pick up a S&W 642 and told the salesman that what I really wanted was a M&P Shield 9 but I can't find one anywhere for months. Every answer I got was we just got some in and sold them within hours. So, he reaches behind the counter a pulls one out in 40 cal. Told me he just got one in yesterday and the guy that had it on hold can't buy it because his wife wouldn't let him (hmm...heard that one many times before). The bad part was he wanted full MSRP $449 because of the shortage. Tired of looking around and coming up short, I bought it and the 642! Honestly, I haven't fired a 40 cal before since I have a full size M&P 9. Heard the recoil isn't that bad, opinions? Figured I have the option of getting a 9mm barrel if Stormlake ever puts one out. Kinda suck I folded into paying full price but heck, I finally got one after being told many times over by LGS that they are months on backorder. Now I get to hit the range with 2 new toys.

Have about 400 rounds through mine and it has been trouble free.
First time I fired it I was so low and to the left it embarrased me.
Dry fire practice and more live fire corrected it. I'm not as accurate with this as my 1911's but I'm happy. Carry it practically every waking moment. Now, if they'll just come out with one in .45...

Ok, so I said no issues with my .40.... I stand corrected. After about 650 rounds the extended mag falls out every time. Now as far as my background, I am not a gunsmith but... I could make a shield or any handgun if I wanted to take the time. I am an inventor/machinist/engineer... I build and manufacture machinery for the textile industry and others. My grandfather used to make the M1 andM14 as well as the original 155 mm field guns for the army. With that said I have called Smith and Wesson and they dont want to hear it, they just want me to ship it back, so off it goes. I cannot blame them. I will wait to see what they say. In my case again no issues till about 650 rounds... The gun is rock solid and the issue for me is the design of the actual magazine, and it is not the notch in the side for the release or the length of the release catch itself. I will put together a video to show what my issue was and how I fixed it. I have to say after 300 rounds of testing today I cannot get the magazine to drop.
