4006 slide stuck/jammed

My earlier post told of the GS having the frame stripped as far as possible. Hammers out, triggers out, Extractor is off the brass,Firing pin is out. The only thing left is the slide lock lever, Slide and barrel and guide rod and recoil spring. and the slide moves back and forth the 1/8 inch under spring tension. Foxy

Hi, Foxy!

How in the world did you get the trigger out without removing the slide?

John?

Foxy,
Why are you still messing with this problem? The gun has been out of action since February.
Why not just make a couple of longitudinal cuts along the slide above the rails and remove the slide in pieces instead of beating the hell out of the gun? Then you will find the problem, replace all destroyed parts, reassemble, and be back in business.
Any way you proceed requires replacement parts, so you might as well do it and be done with it.
Good luck.

First I'm not messing with it, a gun smith is. Its been replaced all ready and was just a back up truck weapon anyhow. Second I'm trying to educate myself as to what happened. and how to advise the next person. Its only a couple of hundred dollar weapon at best so the least amount of cost is the best.No body said any thing about beating the hell out of it since we tried some driving earlier to return to or from battery and mostly its mine and i can proceed how I want. Not trying to be a smart *** but I could use the big press and find out quickly. Right now the GS is traveling across the nation with as truck load of AR'S to deliver so it will be later this month before he gets back which will make it down even longer. Foxy

That sounds like every bulged barreled S/W 45 auto Ive had. Without reading all the previous entries. I remover grips ,sideplate, sear, fish out the safety levers, disconnect etc.Same with decocker assy and firing pin/spring. This is mostly just to inspect them.See if they are broken, chipped . Never been the case, that Ive seen.
Then usually end up driving out the slidestop ( on the 45s it shears off the inner lip of the slidestop but its pretty thin on the 45) dont know on the 40 cal. And lock frame in padded vise and tap slide off forward.

Ive done at least a dozen 45s, all after we added 40 cal to our ammo ,and guys would somehow get a 40 cal round in with the 45s. The 40 would fire , next round pushing the 40 case into the barrel and there you go. Same could happen with 9mm in a 40 cal mixup. Every one only needed a new barrel and slidestop and they were good to go . Just my experience, good luck. Bob

As soon as he gets back in town that's the next step. The barrel doesn't seem bulged but who knows. The extractor is off the brass and the brass is loose in the chamber, turns with a small awl. Factory rounds is what it was sent out with and only one brass is in the chamber in the proper spot(seems to be a 40) and nothing in the barrel.Foxy

Well its the out of site and out of mind deal. Talked with him over the weekend. He cut the slide lock lever and it wont drive out or move at all. He said the slide is so jammed its holding the pin TIGHT. So now in his spare time he will have to cut/drill the pin out. Will keep all updated. Foxy

Well, it's been another couple of months. Any news on this thing?

Not me, I do it all the time. Spread the cheer. It's a great way of sharing the sport and lifestyle. Admittedly, I don't do it with extremely fine or elite handguns, but with a service grade 3rd Gen like a 4006? Heck yeah.

Last gun I let a buddy borrow was my '85 built 7.5" barreled Redhawk .44 Mag. He had a blast with it. He's shopping for one right now.

This sounds identical to what happened to mt 5904 earlier this year. One of the 3 levers was not dropping when the slide was being retacted. Your boy may have been shooting dirty ammo that has jammed one of them up. Mine was grease that stuck it up. Sounds stupid but try running it under hot water, it may flush out anything holding it in place. Just a thought!

I just read this thread for the first time. It simple reaffirms my long standing rule . . . never loan one of your firearms to anyone. ;)
So true... assuming you actually expect to get it back in the exact same condition it left your hands. ;)

OP seems to have abandoned us.
I find it amusing that this is the 4th most popular thread ever in the entire S&W semi-auto pistols sub-forum going by replies and the 10th most popular thread ever going by views (excluding the photos mega-thread at the top of the page). :D

And yet we still have no confirmed explanation or reason for what happened to this fine 3rd Gen pistol other than speculation and a reinforcement of the fact that you shouldn't loan your gun out to other people and assume it's going to come back to you as it left your hands.  :)
