4006 slide stuck/jammed

I suspect that the base of the guide rod has separated and the flared piece is cocked in the pocket

Thinking along this line, have you tried grabbing the end of the guide rod and twisting/turning or even pulling it? Perhaps even grab it with channel locks, it would be a relatively cheap part to replace (guide rod).

Foxy - coming in from far left field on this one.

PPCSHOOTER may have guessed it. Could it be "galling"? Odd that neither S&W or the gunsmiths didn't mention it.

Happened to me two years ago with a new SA stainless 1911 Mil Spec at the range. Everything was working well until my slide locked up tighter than you-know-who's "hat band" We couldn't move that slide with a sledge hammer. I was using off the shelf ammo. It was a "galling" problem between the movement of the slide and frame.

Sent it back to Springfield on their nickel. They said that it was a known problem in stainless steel models. Had to do with the specific alloy that they used in the factory during production. Tried to read and interpret the comments in the repair order (they are always cryptic), but I was able to determine that somehow they were able to remove the slide and then they had to completely re-fit it to the frame. I believe that they also had to do some milling work on the rails.

Just one old buzzard's opinion, based on my actual experience.

I'll tell the GS that's wurkin' on it about the guide rod and Galling issue. The only thing though is the slide moves back and forth about a 1/4 inch freely now, still springs and originally I moved the slide back about a 1/2 inch with the muzzle down on the bench and pounded the handgrip with my hand method. And you read my above post where Smith said to take it to a gunsmith.

Foxy,

I've spoken with other 1911 owners here (still a "semi") and read a good bit on this same subject. There is almost 100% agreement that semis do have to be lubed. Bill Wilson even has a You Tube video on it that features his own "special sauce", which I have:

As much as I paid for that darned thing, I don't want problems at the range with my Wilson Combat 1911 or to have to send it back to "The Mother Ship". Other forum members have also their own lube preferences - Frog Lube, Mobile 1, Rem Oil etc.

IIRC, it was the alloy in the slide, which was different from the frame, that caused my problems. There was no possible movement at all for me. Afterwards I switched from "Shooter's Choice" (red) to lithium grease (white) which was the same that we used at the ranges in the Marine Corps. It's also a lot cheaper than Bill's "special sauce".

This may not be the situation (problem) for your S&W 4006. It's just a possibility.

@BSeabrooke--Thanks Hard Charger,The slide is sorta loose in place, moves back and forth maybe a 1/4 inch and pull back a 1/4 ,springs forward the 1/4. Might be an 1/8 but you know what I mean. Foxy

I believe that the decocking/safety lever on the slide has to be in the horizontal position in order for you to disassemble the pistol.
This: http://pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/FIREARMS/s&w_pistol.pdf

See page 22.

POSTSCRIPT: Well I may be wrong about this. I just looked at page 14. It talks about the slide being withdrawn with the lever down in the safe position.

Looking at your photos, I notice that the hammer is cocked and the decocker/safety is on 'safe'. Shouldn't the hammer be down in that case?
Can you put the decock lever on 'fire', pull the trigger, and lower the hammer?

My earlier post told of the GS having the frame stripped as far as possible. Hammers out, triggers out, Extractor is off the brass,Firing pin is out. The only thing left is the slide lock lever, Slide and barrel and guide rod and recoil spring. and the slide moves back and forth the 1/8 inch under spring tension. Foxy

WITH THE SLIDE MOVING A LITTLE BIT MAKES ME MORE CERTAIN THAT IT IS IS GALLED. I'VE SEEN IT BEFORE. PEOPLE USED GUN SCRUBBER ( OR ANY SIMILAR PRODUCT) TO HOSE IT OFF THAN APPLIED 1 OF THOSE NEW WONDER LUBES. THE KIND WHERE TO PUT IT ON AND WIPE IT OFF. SORRY TO SAY IT'S A TOUGH ROAD AHEAD. JP

Saw the following on another subject. May apply here?

I was a little groggy last night but am remembering more this morning.

This may be what was described in my armorer class that was claimed (by S&W) to be a fault of a special FBI specified trigger - intended to improve the trigger pull - that could over-ride the draw bar, totally locking up the pistol.

With the trigger and draw bar unmovable, the hammer would not move either, so the slide could not be retracted. If loaded, the pistol could not be unloaded, but neither would it fire.

The trigger was spec'ed for FBI pistols, but made it's way into pistols meant for other police contracts and for the commercial market.

At least, that's the story S&W told....

Was a post on a 1076 recall
Could be connected

No you haven't missed anything yet. The armorer been busy and just hasn't gotten back to scratching his head in wonder. Not a high priority at this point. Did Hear back from Frank the S&W warranty guy in Texas, who said he's never ever heard of such a thing with the 4006. So one GS said he's fixed several and the Smith guy says, Nope doesn't happen. I'll send it to him if we cant get it apart "in House". Foxy

Well not really.Got his airboat fixed and now he has some free time from work to get back on the Smith. One interesting fact though,The one GS said he's seen the barrel lugs shear off and fixed several. Smith warranty guy said he's been a repair place since the 80's and never seen that. This past weekend I was shooting with a fellow that shoots competition with 1911's and he said he had a 4506 lock up tight. Had to cut it open and the barrel lugs sheared off jamming it up tighter than Dick's hatband. So two say its personally happened and Smith repair guy saying no way, wont do that!!!! i about to have him cut the slide if we cant drill out the slide lock lever. Foxy

Foxy: How about an update on the progress to solve (fix) this problem? Inquiring minds want to know. ............

Still cant get the slide open,he's been busy with work etc. I'll press him about it tomorrow ,Kinda one of those out of site and outta mind deal. Just about sure he'll have to cut the slide off
