4006 slide stuck/jammed

Roger....but didn't see if ammo was reload or factory.
If factory I'd send to them.
Also my faded memory seems that Cal Highway Patrol had some similar issues in the 90s.
Might hollar at their armorers for hints. As long as they been shooting 3rd Gen 40s they might have an insite.

Well I don't know if the round was factory or reload. I wasn't shooting it and I loaned it out with factory rounds,so I assume its factory but cant be sure since I wan't there. Foxy

Ok my friend. Agency I was with had Sam gun as Cal Hp.
They called us/ me in 90s seeing if we had any kabooms.
Seems like Trooper I talked to had similar issues to yours he was working on. 20 years ago
Memory is foggy.

The weapon is from that time frame. Wonder how I get a hold of an old school smithy from CHP?? Gonna call tech support at Smith also. Makes no sense to be this stuck except for the recoil spring? and then what do you grind/drill/ hammer to release it? Foxy

Seems like they are still issuing them. Or their special order brothers the smith won't share with us. I'd call or email their headquarters PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER. He's gonna pass the request for info to the gunsmiths.

Okay here is the latest!!! Glad I'm not in a firefight!! but if I was I'd want my M 14 not a pistol! Anyhow got the extractor out,off the brass. The brass is loose in the chamber so its not the brass hung up. Trying to drive the slide lock lever out from this position and it wont budge. So might have to drill it. Good thing he has access to machinery not available to most folks. The weapon at this point is still the same ,Brass is loose, Slide is still stuck in that position, and extractor is loose and the only thing left is the recoil spring and guide rod that I can think of. Waiting on SW to answer Back.Sent them a trouble ticket. Foxy

Bet Smith says buy a new M&P
Blaaaa Blaaaa Blaaaaaaa not any body around to fix that model

Any chance you could get it x rayed? That should give you, or the smith, a good idea of what's going on in there.

Thats a good idea and might be something to try. Got an answer back from Smith. Sent them a detailed report on the weapon, how far the frame is stripped, brass is loose etc along with pictures. Their suggestion is- put the muzzle on the bench and smack the handgrip with my hand or a plastic hammer to free the stuck brass. Thought I typed the history and details in English?????????? In a round about way got ahold of another GS and talked with him. He said he was familiar with the problem. Said the barrel lugs break off and bind every thing up. Said he's had 40's 45's and one 9 to fix just for this problem. Said he's gotten some apart and some not. Takes a new barrel to fix it once he gets it apart if he can get it apart. Wants me to ship it to him and he'll see. Another option, but I'd ship it to Smith first. Maybe they would warrant it then I could trade it on a Colt. Foxy

If that is what happened, I can't imagine the level of destruction on the top interior of the slide -- both due to the lugs breaking off and repeated attempts to open the pistol.

To be clear, I am not suggesting you quit trying to open this pistol. All I'm saying is that I don't believe a new barrel makes this a great gun.

I think what we've got here is a parts gun and taking it apart as carefully as possible is the goal -- to preserve whatever parts can be preserved.

Thankfully, this is a high-production, service grade gun. While I am not (in any way!) attempting to sound callous, I'm glad that the gun in question is simply nothing "special." Especially being a .40cal pistol, we could make an argument (only before agreeing to strip all emotion from it as) that a 4006 is amongst the least sought-after of all 3rd Gen pistols.

There are thousands of 4006 owners who would disagree, me included! You obviously don't own one and never fired one.......

Seriously, just for a second, try and strip the heart & emotion away when you ponder a post... for your own well-being, so you don't get offended.

It's a fine gun. Well, a 4006 is a fine gun. If you rank the greatest handguns of all-time, it certainly hits the top-thousand list somewhere.

The one in question is most likely wrecked. It is fortunate that it is easily replaceable.

A general tip for internet discussion forum users: most posts, thoughts and ideas are not (at all) meant to be personal insults. There is real vision to be gained by stepping back just for a moment and trying to grasp the idea being offered rather than being annoyed or offended by it.

Oh I'm not insulted or offended at all. Metal is metal and there are many handguns of the same quality out there to replace it with for the same money as repairs would cost. One though though is , I don't like to lose and this weapon is winning right now. But remember one of my earlier posts is the shop has a 250 ton press that will Open it and I win!!! Sort of. Cant shoot it now and wont be able to shoot it after that but the slide will be all the way back. I'll wait to see what Smith says, rewrote them with the details again and waiting for a response. If they tell me to range clear it on the bench again, I'll send it to them and tell them to clear it for me!!!! Foxy

Foxy: I'm an old retired pistolsmith. I have faced this problem with Colts but never a Smith. I think that if you force the issue with a huge press that both the slide and the frame will be ruined. Why not bite the bullet (pun) and have the machine shop make two slitting cuts one on either side of the slide just above the frame rail top position and then cut thru the ejection port area. Yes, it sacrifices the slide, but there are lots of replacement slides out there for little money. Why ruin the frame (expensive) ? Do that and I have an old 4006 slide that you can have for little more than shipping and packaging cost. ........
