4006 slide stuck/jammed

That was a thought too. What I'm also weighing is the repair cost over the replacement cost. Before I press it, (I just keep threatening the weapon with the press). I'll send it to Smith but right now its being a challenge and We are trying to fix it in house for our education. Thanks for the slide offer and I'll keep everyone in the loop also. Also the Armorer just sent a cooler lid thru his airboat prop at 2800 revs and ripped the cage and shattered the prop and ripped holes in his fiberglass hull. He brought it to me to repair so now I got bargining power!!!!

Here hold my beer and watch this!

Lets don't argue over the fondness of the weapon. I took that post to mean, weigh the repair cost over the replacement cost. This thread is to try and help get this 4006 fixed or at least find the problem. But here's something to ponder....The GS I talked with is a single person type shop. So he's seen this is in 40's 45's and one nine. Implies 5 or more 06's that he's had to fix for this problem. Some he got apart, some he didn't. What this tells me is the problem occurs regularly and if it does the weapon is done 'til some major surgery. So how many broke ones are out there???? It will be neat to see if indeed its the barrel lugs as he predicted. If it is then each time the trigger is pulled yours might be next.......... Foxy

For me, the lesson is: Don't lend your 3rd Gen pistols out to other people... especially your ex's son. :(

At least if one of my 3rd Gens failed and locked-up on me, I'd likely know a little bit more about how or why it happened. :o

No "Dis" on you. This has been a very interesting thread. Thank you for sharing it with us. :)

I don't believe it was anything to do with who pulled the trigger. The barrel doesn't seem bulged and the brass is loose in the chamber so I don't think it was a reload or round problem. Carried this one in the truck since it weighs a ton loaded so replacing it with something else is fine and the Ex's sons problem is the fact it was returned broke and secret.

At this point I'd not be surprised if the barrel might've cracked at either of the camming lugs and sheared off, wedging everything together. If the camming cuts on the frame were damaged (especially at the top, where they "time" the release of the barrel lugs to let the barrel rise out of the frame), your frame is toast.

I'd type more, but the damned long running, unresponsive "script" (advertiser?) on this website keeps locking up my computer.

Really? I never thought so, but maybe you haven't seen this 4006?
Okay, as I said clearly, I have -two- 4006 pistols.

If you really believe the pistol you've shown to be what I am talking about, in ANY WAY, back up your post-- trade that pistol to me. I will give you -BOTH- of my 4006 pistols and six total magazines for it.

I'm kinda partial to my plain Jane average Tactical 4006 with the ugly riveted on rail.

Wouldn't get rid of it even with the ugly billboard silk screening on the slide. That's why I bought a second beater for the range and woods/fishing trips.

Nothing wrong with that. ;)

FWIW, I saw a CHP memo from '05 which included some info about how their testing revealed that the 4006TSW's appeared to exhibit better durability and potential longevity than their older model 4006's. Of course, the 4006 was beefed up a bit with the introduction of the TSW versions.

... a 4006 is amongst the least sought-after of all 3rd Gen pistols.
First ouch!!! :(

Double ouch!!! :( :(

I think I better have my warm milk and go to bed early. :o Next thing you know, my old pre-TSW Model 4006 in liable to just up and self-destruct on me.

And I don't want to be anywhere near it if/when that happens! :D

++++++++

p.s., Anyone want to buy a Model 4006 quick and cheap??? :p

TTSH, sent you a PM. Let me know via email if you're interested.

@ fastbolt I'm sure this is what the GS was talking about seeing the lugs sheared off. I called them locking lugs but camming lugs is probably right . Same thing different name. Foxy

Heard back from Smith again... Take it to a gunsmith...... so much for interest from the Factory.....

Unsurprising, especially if you're not the original owner.

Admittedly, the gun has been "inspected", exploring the "problem" quite a bit outside the company's hands. ;)

This is starting to look like a major issue is probably involved, and their engineers are familiar enough with their products to be able to have an idea of whether or not they ought to look at it for being a suspected design/materials defect.

Guns wear out at some point. Or may experience ammunition issues that can create accelerated wear & tear, or even damage, not envisioned or considered normal by the factory. How often has the recoil spring been replaced, anyway? If you're not the original owner, how can you know how the gun was treated and maintained by the previous owner(s)?

The all-steel 4006's were(are) robust guns, but I've learned of a small number of older, well-used 4006's that eventually experienced cracks in barrels, slides or frames after enough rounds had been fired through them. Also, the company hasn't been making replacement barrels or slides for the older standard 3rd gen 4006's for some years (and TSW barrels don't fit the older slides, and the TSW slides don't fit the older frames).

FWIW, have you thought about trying to call Frank in TX (authorized warranty center)? Maybe he might have a different perspective than the "front line" customer service representative with whom you were probably exchanging emails. Can't hurt to try. If he isn't interested in inspecting the aging gun under "warranty", maybe he might have a different suggestion to consider.

Worth a call, maybe. I've never had occasion to use his services. (I'm an armorer, and when an occasional problem might come along beyond the scope of an armorer level field repair, I shipped them to the factory.) I've read good things about him and his shop by forum members, though.

This is a one owner weapon with maybe 500 rounds thru it.Hung on the bedpost for a few years, should have a weak mag spring if anything. shot it ever no and then to keep the bore dust free so to speak. What aggravates me though is I wrote them a detailed letter explaining the problem and that the gunsmith still can't free the slide along with the frame stripped as far as possible. First answer was to clear it as one would at the range. They must not have read the e/mail, so I resent another explaining the gunsmith is stuck so to speak and the answer was - Take it to a gunsmith to clear the brass.Nothing about, Sorry it broke, ship it to the factory We'll take a peek at it. Again never must have read the e/mail,just a one line answer.Great customer service ,makes me want to buy 6 more Smiths and makes me glad I depend on Colts and Tokarev's .Can't beat WW2 steel. Got a LLama in the truck now, older ones are great!!! I'll try to contact LSG ,used to guide hunters near Comanche and this 4006 was there too in the truck. Just wasnt broke then. Foxy

Wrote Frank and we'll see what his ideas are. Though Ya'll might like to see the gunsmith's airboat. This happens when you don't bungie cord the lid on the cooler when the hinges are broke. Swinging a chunk of 66 inch wood at 2800 rpms gets loud when it explodes. Parts of prop went everywhere cutting all the stringers and going out the bottom of the hull too. Good thing the water was shallow!!!! Had to wade out and recover it the next day. Foxy

I suspect that the base of the guide rod has separated and the flared piece is cocked in the pocket
