How many mags? Box?

I paid under $200 for mine. But the thing is, that was close to a decade now and I know that 3rd Gen prices have been going only in one direction and it sure ain't down.

If I remember right , there were 500 sent to the CHP that have the MSF prefix . I have one I bought from Summit when he first got them . Since you have the serial# , call S&W and ask them . If it is one , I would think it's worth the money . I won't tell what I paid for mine , but that was a couple of years ago .

My advice is to buy it. Several reasons: it has CHP history, two mags (you can hunt for more, they are out there), they don't make that quality metal frame anymore, the price is not going down anytime soon (which is to say, the next time you see one, it will cost you more), and it is one of my favorites. I can think of other reasons, but those are the main ones.
I'm not really sure that any S&W CHP, or other LE issued example is worth more than a non LE example. Of course I'm not considering people that collect LE examples and I'm not referencing special examples that were only offered to and purchased by LE departments.
If I didn't have one, maybe I'd think hard about spending $600.00. If it's local you're not paying shipping/insurance costs so that's a plus when you minus those costs.
I got a great condition MSF 4013TSW 28 months ago for less but I had to pay to get it in my possession. It came with the factory box, (actually a factory MSF 4013TSW, NOT serialized to the pistol,) mags and papers. I originally thought I paid to much but after having it and using it for a while I'm OK with what I paid.

I paid $385 plus shipping for one about 3 years ago that came with a couple of magazines, no box, and it is a former CHP firearm with the MSF prefix. As of now, it is my favorite 3rd gen. The prices do seem to be going up and I can't recall seeing one for under $500 in some time. Hope that helps!

I agree with what Zarr posted. I have one like yours, OP that I bought online from a pawnshop that had it on GB about a year ago. I can't remember offhand what I paid, 350-400? Plus shipping and transfer. I can't see if yours has the numbered slide/bbl and frame like mine does because the second pic won't enlarge for me, but I will say that the double-action trigger on mine is excellent. Yours looks to be in a little better shape than mine, too. Buy it!
ETA: And mine only came with one mag. I also have a 4013TSW with rail and I think I like the rail-less version just a bit better.

This thread just made me go check my 4013tsw (non-railed) and it is a msf prefix. It also has SO360 on the barrel, slide and frame. So a chp gun, additionally what do the extra numbers mean?

Does the railed version add/subtract value compared to the non-railed version of this model, or about the same?
IMO, nowadays $600 seems a fair price for that gun. Neither cheap nor exorbitant. Anything in the area of $500 or less I would think leans toward "bargain," for a prissy one.

How bad do you want it? What is it worth to YOU? This is not something you can readily run down to the gun store and buy that's always there. I sold my 4013 over 10 years ago for $250 and I'd pay $600 to get it back no doubt. If you think about how polymer framed pistols can fetch $600+ up in to the thousands for custom work new then an aluminum framed stainless classic that is built like a tank and not made anymore is worth every bit of $600.

I bought my 4013TSW about 8 years for about $300.00 dollars. Remember with time and inflation everything has gone up in price. I love mine and it is my EDC and my night stand gun. It shoots like a dream and is just a nice overall gun. If you really want one then it is up to you to put a value on it. You can't buy a comparable gun like that today for $600.00 so I would say go for it.
I got mine within the past year but it was not panic priced.
If you are looking for a carry gun with a bit more umph than 9mm it's your gun. It's a great size for IWB and has all the inherent qualities that make 3rd gen Smiths so desirable.
The only other gun I have in .40 that gives it a run for its money, and possibly beats it out by a bit, is my Beretta PX4 compact. They are the exact same size but the PX4, with the D spring installed, has a bit better DA trigger and at least as good as in SA, and the rotating barrel seems to be give a bit less recoil; although the reset isn't as good as the Smith.
If you accumulate Smiths as I tend to do and don't have any other .40s and will actually carry it, I'd buy it; if not for carry, I'd keep looking and find something full size for range or HD use, maybe a PX4, Beretta 96, or one of the full-size Smith .40. Or even, heaven forbid, something in a striker-fired.
But you won't be sorry with the 4013.

I think they're numbered because each piece is fitted to the gun.

Thanks for the reply, that's what I was thinking but wasn't sure.
I have a 4046, and a 5946, a 6906 and then they go over to the 45 ACP's & 10's. I would like to have a 4013 myself, and in this day & time, with all of the 40 brass & bullets I have, I could shoot them a long time.
I think you should just bite the bullet (as they say) and get it! Just a little high today is a good deal by Christmas, I think. But you may not find any by the time you decide later on.

First, they are inventory numbers.
Second, when a busy armorer has a bunch of the same model guns to clean/service, having the slides, barrels, and frames marked with the same number makes getting all the pieces back with their original companions a whole lot easier.

To support what "JohnHL" said, and to add to it a bit the second run of TSW's were/are slide to framed matched during production. The railed, (and non railed railed examples,) were co-witnessed numbered. Well most were. The first run, non railed were not.
So there could be many numbers.

I paid $600 for mine about 6 months ago. It was New old stock with box, paperwork, storage paper, orange chamber flag and two mags total.
It's not a CHP serial number, but that's ok.
Very tight fit, it's a bit of a beast to disassemble. The rails looked like the slide wasn't even moved back and forth hardly at all.
Still debating if I want to go through the challenge of finding a holster maker that makes holsters for it. So far only Kramer appears to actually list it that I've found of those I prefer...
