40th Bday- what should I get?

Both are good. I would not walk away from a -5 version if you find one that appeals to you at a reasonable price. Generally, I think the 19-5s I have seen were not finished quite as nicely as the -4s, but beauty (and price) are in the eye of the beholder. ;) Do not get to overly wrought about the P&R thing. Judge the gun, if you are buying a “shooter,” for what you see - and the asking price.

A WTB ad here is probably a good idea. And GI. I rarely look at GB anymore. I’d start here. JMHO.

Thanks everyone for the tips and the help! What is GI?

Guns International is what I think he is referring to. Just had my 60th birthday not long ago. Be sure to get what you want. For me, it has been two 29 Classics recently. Plus my father in law gave me an original US Army 1911. 😁

Agree with the Model 40 suggestion:

Ha! Thanks! Where can I find older revolvers? Getting a revolver thats my age is actually a pretty good idea. Im torn between the 19 or a performance center. I already own the 686 which I absolutely love.

I don't own any performance center models so I can't help you there. But, I have a favorite local gun store that gets old S&Ws all the time...from family members who want to sell an inherited one or people who just want to trade. They are my premiere source!

I also go to several gun shows and have made some friends there that get to know what you like and are looking for. Lots of time though the gun show prices on older no-lock S&Ws have been absolutely outrageous. I often wonder...do they REALLY want to sell or are they just parading their collection around like a traveling museum? Most buyers are aware of current market values and I always tend to see the exact same overpriced S&Ws these sellers haul from show to show. But, if it's one that you just have to own, you could try too haggle a little.

I haven't ever bought any firearm on an auction site as I like to see them in person and do my inspection tests instead of taking a sellers online word for it. Plus there are a lot of extra fees involved besides just your purchase amount.

So, look around some LGS(local gun stores) and a gun shows. It takes time to learn but that's half the fun!

Good luck!
