Sorry about the off-topic question, friends.

Does anyone know if ammo being sold as M855 could actually be the lesser penetrating XM855? Winchester for example. It is sold as M855 but some sellers on sale sites say the commercial manufacturers of M855 are actually making the XM855. Can they, Winchester for example, sell labeled M855 ammunition that is really XM855?

Confused, Dave

The M855 ammo is for a military contract. If for some reason it doesn't hit the specs perfectly the military doesn't accept it or if there is an overruns they they end up with A Lot of ammo on their hands. They reliable it XM855 and sell it to the public.

I have read reports on tests done on the XM855 ammo and it seems identical to the M855 contract ammo. I'm sorry but I can't remember where I read that report or I would post the link.

If you find XM855 for a good price buy it up and have fun shooting all you can. (IMO of course)

the X prefix also can denote an item that hasn't passed acceptance or design certs YET.

I helped test the Excaliber M982 GPS rocket boosted 155 cluster artillery round. During the testing phase it was the XM982.

The earliest AR rifles were XM something,

Thanks everyone!

Maybe the seller of his M855 just doesn't want me/us to buy it from anyone else, so made that statement. Thank you!!!!
