I am looking at a Performance Center 5906. It may have originally been sold in MA. Would trigger pull laws have impacted a pistol that went through the performance center? Is there a source to find what the factory pull would have been? Thanks.

I am looking at a Performance Center 5906.

Just a guess on my part would be no. The PC probably didn't change spring weights on their "regular" production offerings. One offs per customer request I'll bet did happen.

Just out of my own curiosity and to further the conversation, which PC 5906 is in question? S&W is notorious for numbering/labeling many different examples the same. (Chief Special, M&P, 5906 are easy one's right now for me.)

I've got "factory" trigger pull weights on a few, others here do too. Which PC 5906 would be relavent to your question?

Jim

The law went into effect October 21, 1998. Guns registered in the state before that date are exempt from the law. Some people maintain that since S&W is licensed by the state all guns made in Springfield no matter where they were shipped were registered in the state.

I have no idea if that's true or not, and it's not relevant to the question asked.

Only guns delivered to retailers in MA were subject to the law, so if it was a PC gun and shipped somewhere else, it likely had what we call in MA a "free state" trigger.

How long has that trigger pull law been in effect? That 5906 my have pre-dated it.

Thanks. When someone who lives or lived in Mass. tries to explain some of the laws people sometimes think we're doing a comedy routine.

We aren't.

Ironically, MA only considers a firearm (handgun) to be the complete firearm, not just the frame or receiver. Which opens a "loophole" to bring in non compliant handguns because federal law considers the frame to be "the gun."

It takes some contortions, but bringing in "non roster" guns is not very complicated.

Great information.

Most of the 5906 P/C models made for sale in the us were made for the police PPC market. Even the 4" DPA models were made for IDPA and Police service pistol competition. As such all would have to have a single action trigger press of 3.5 lbs to meet NRA rules. All of the ones I have had DPA ,PPC models were over 4 lbs single action when new and had full length and strength 5906 hammer springs. The P/C guns appeared to have a little trigger work done to make them a bit smoother but not much. They want to make sure the guns fired whatever ammo you might be shooting. I took a quick look at the MA laws and I think it said handguns used for competitions or Olympic competition were exempt from some rules and I never saw a weight requirement. Only some safety thing like firing when dropped etc. I didnt spend much time looking, good luck.

Well I learn something every day. I had no idea there were state trigger pull laws.

FWIW, I have a couple of DPA 5906s, and while their DA pulls are very smooth, overall trigger pull weight feels no lighter than standard production 5906s. The good part of that is I've never had a light primer strike with any ammo I've ever used.

There is a separate roster for competition guns in MA. The 5906 would not meet the criteria.
