My M5946 DAO is supposedly a former NYPD gun. That is what I was told by the online seller but without any documentation. The SN is VCU1171 and came with a 15 rd mag. A 'Caution' is etched on the slide that the gun will fire with the mag removed. The gun is in excellent condition IMHO.

Curious about whether the SN, etching with photos give members enough info to ID it as a NYPD issued 5946. It may have to be 'lettered' to know for sure if a PD was the original owner.

Many thanks for your feedback.

There are two ways you can try to find out.
The first way would be to contact the NYPD records department and give them your serial number and ask nicely.
They are very bissy people, with that whole underfunded, understaffed trying to help solve crime thing they do. They may say no, or ask for a fee.The nicer you are, the more they maybe willing to help you.

The other is to contact the S&W historical society and file a request. It cost 70 bucks, but they will get you a letter with the history S&W knows.

WAG here; but seem strange that the NYPD would disable a safety feature on a gun..........

8+ lb NewYork trigger on Glocks...............

DAO......long "heavy" revolver like triggers

Last years of the revolver they were IIRC DAO ...... could not be cocked to fire single action......................

Whatever...... buy the gun...... not the story!!

The warning on the slide is consistent with an NYPD gun, but I think you have to send a letter if you want to know. I would be surprised if NYPD were willing to give you any information . . .

However it goes, that's one gorgeous gun...

Sent from my Note 5, which thinks it can spell better than I can...

I have an NYPD 5946 with a VLMXXX serial number and the "Caution" markings on the slide. Mine came with an NYPD "purchase authorization" form letter with the serial number on it and a number of signatures. It would seem to at least be consistent with yours.

From a police collector's point of view, Mlk18 scored big-time by getting the authorization letter with serial number with the gun. I believe this indicates the gun would actually not letter to the NYPD, but was purchased from an external vendor, like a gun shop, thus the need for purchase authorization.

I only deal with revolvers, so I don't know current practice, but as for the chance of the department providing you with any information, let me phrase it succinctly: Buwahahaha .... (Sorry ;))

Most NYPD service sidearms have since the mid-20th century been procured by the department's Equipment Bureau and then been sold to officers. They will letter as such. We also have quite a few current and former NYPD officers on the forum, so if you edit your thread title and put NYPD in it, you may draw their attention and get first-hand info.

NYPD

Absalom....Thanks for the tip on editing title. But for some reason I could not delete the ?? and replace with NY. Likely computer operator error!
