5R Barrel

No conclusive statement here as I've had experience with only four 5R Remington barrels.

Consider trying more than one of these barrels before making a decision as to the 5R rifling method in itself being an improvement over other rifling types. There is certainly nothing wrong with the design and well-made 5R barrels will shoot as accurately as other well-made barrels. Whether the 5R feature offers any more than a theoretical textbook improvement as opposed to a real improvement remains unclear. There likely are marketing aspects that also merit consideration. However, a good barrel is a good barrel regardless of how it is rifled.

As for comparative ease of cleaning and reduction in copper fouling with 5R barrels, this too remains unclear. Many of today's mass-produced hammer forged barrels with conventional rifling are easier to clean and copper-foul far less than similar barrels of just a few years ago.

Three of the 5R Remington barrels I've used have been very accurate. One was mediocre. I can make exactly the same statement about Remington barrels from twenty-five or more years ago.

5R barrels have been produced in this country by Boots Obermeyer for a long time, I guess since the '70s or so. Mr. Obermeyer has an excellent reputation for building fine barrels.

My Sport II has the standard 4140 1:9 twist, and as long as I don't go any heavier than 69 grains, it is very accurate....honestly, with good ammo, it will shoot a 1.25 MOA.

It should shoot the Hornaday 75 gr HPBT round very well. NOT the A-Max of the same weight. That one is too long. No clue what the 77 gr SMK does, but Sierra suggests nothing slower than 1-8.

Wait, that 1:8 was a gain twist? What rate does it have at the chamber?

There have been many statements about the gain twist in the early 1 in 8 5 r barrels. I have never heard anything to definitively confirm this. I really believe if it says 1 in 8 twist rate that is what it is.
