629 club

Your photo looks great to me.
That's a cool looking gun, what do usually use for loads in it ? Have you shot it much with magnums?I need a 3" gun for the pile but they are few and far between around here. Would like to hear your thoughts on how it handles the different loads.
Thanks in advance.

I haven't shot 44 magnum rounds a lot, but with medium level 44 mag it's not bad at all.

I usually don't shoot 44 mag max loads in my S&Ws.

I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk and a Marlin carbine for those. :D

It think the Hogue grips help a lot to soak up the recoil -- and probably the porting helps as well.

I don't even notice the porting as far as muzzle flash is concerned -- at least during daylight.

It takes me a few seconds to get back on target after shooting a 44 mag round. I'm working to reduce that issue.

44 Special is very mild.

I also tried 44 Russian today and that worked well.

44 Russian may become one of my favorite rounds.

Good choice in loads, while I have been known to fire more than a few true magnums, no gun should get a steady diet of them, my everyday working load is the rcbs250k and enough unique to reach 950 or there about in the 4" guns that I prefer, that same load will usually go 1100 in the longer guns.

I like the front sight on the PC 44 mag hunter. It's a filled cavity the red is not visible from the side.

Is this the same sight has the competitor because it looks like there's plenty of room to do whatever you need to on this one. By the way, your photos are great, wish I could take pics like that.

Thanks I need to get better with the pictures, plan to work on that.
The competitor sight is mounted the same way there is room to move.

I've had a Model 29 for something like 30 years. I use it for Large Bore Pistol Silhouette and am proud to say I'm pretty competitive in AA shooting against guys that are mostly shooting scoped TCs.

I've tried a lot of different loads and have never gotten it to shoot quite as accurately as I think it should. What should I expect at 25 yds? Currently shooting 225 gr Speer over 22 gr 296.

I gave up on 296 about 3 months after giving up on H110( it wasn't until about 10yrs ago that I learned they where the same) went back to 2400 and haven't strayed since. If ammo is put together with care and tailored to the gun, sub 1" group's at 25yds are fairly common and when the light is good 4" or less is do able at 100. I've seen good shooters print 6" groups on cardboard rams at 200yds, from the creedmore with iron sights( not me...lol )
Although I've never got top accuracy with the speer 240sp, never tried anything lighter, I have had good luck with hornady's and both the Lyman and rcbs Keith bullets.
What kind of performance are you getting with your load? Does it seem to settle down at 100?

This is the 629 I 've had since 1984. Carried it as a sidearm in bear country in Alaska during hunts . Still handload for it and enjoy shooting every minute of it.:D
That looks great,
I'm sure that when I say I'd love to hear some story's of you and your guns trips, others would enjoy them too...
If you have the time, a story or two would be great.
Thanks for posting

I'm not getting anything close to 1" at 25 yds and it spreads evenly out to 100 yds. (i.e. 4X). I've tried other powders, including 2400, and it doesn't seem to make much diff so I stuck with 296 just because I had a bunch. I've often wondered if I'm just not getting a consistent roll crimp.

I just got some Hornady 240's so I'll see how those work in a few weeks.
