While cleaning my 63-5 after a trip to the range---I shot 100 rounds of Federal 22lr 40gr Solid Champion AutoMatch Ammo---I discovered this! Obviously, something is wrong, and I'll be sending the revolver back to S&W. Meanwhile, I'd appreciate your expert opinions as to what the problem might be. Many thanks in advance for your replies.

I agree that it sure looks like lead. Try some good bore solvent and a bronze brush. Leave the solvent on the area for 15-20 minutes before trying to brush it off.

As others have noted this is simply lead deposits that are completely normal. Personally I use a dental pick with a gentle touch to remove the bulk of the buildup and finish with a bronze brush. BTW, that crack in the frame to the right of the hammer isn't a crack, it is simply the seam where the sideplate is fitted into the frame recess.

It is definitely just lead build-up. A bit of solvent sitting for a few minutes and a gentle scraping will remove it easily. For a scraper I use a 223 cartridge that has been flattened on the end where the bullet used to be. Works great and cheap and easy to make too.

Whew! I'm relieved to learn that it's not a problem, after all. Again, many thanks to all who took time to reply. This forum is invaluable, especially for a new shooter like me.
