Hello,

I recently purchased a 642 for my wife. I love this little guy, but the DAO trigger is a bit heavy for her.

I youtubed the "Trigger Job", and it seems to be a simple process. Now, Where do I purchase all the springs and equipment to do this? Do you all have assembly schematics for this revolver? Part numbers for the new springs?

On second Thought, should I send it to S&W to get it worked on?

Thanks

Try Apex Tactical Specialties, Inc

They make a j-frame kit that you can install. I put one in my 438 last night. You can do a search on the forum, there was a thread about these kits a few months back.

I was happy with the Wolff spring swap for my 642. My wife had the same problem. The Wolff Springs website has suggestions as to which spring to purchase for which level of trigger pull reduction you want. I can't measure the actual pull but I estimate it is about 1/3 less.

Remember to keep the old parts, in case you have to send your gun back to S&W, for any service or repair work. Some folks report that S&W put things back to original.

Yes. If you're not familiar with how to work on a Centennial, send it to the factory and have them work on it. I'm assuming this gun is for self defense and not just a range gun. You want the gun to be as near 100% reliable as possible for that.

Edit to ad: Try dry firing the gun 1000 times before doing anything. Make sure the gun is properly oiled also.

Thanks for the help everyone

I have planned on letting my wife shoot this for fun so we can have a bonding moment. I think she will be getting her dad's Beretta 84FS Cheetah. Which means I will customize the 642 for myself!! Ha!

Though, I thought dry firing was bad juju ... I also have heard that its ok on the newer revolvers. Now that being said, I will work this guy in.

I appreciate all the help from everyone, I have ordered the Apex kit and cannot wait to get this in the mail.

If anyone has any pointers, or tips please feel free to post.

When replacing the rebound spring, use a philips screwdriver that is just a touch smaller in diameter than the spring and it will go right in.

Get her a set of snap caps.
Her trigger finger will get stronger.

Ditto on the Snap Caps

I have ordered the Wolff spring sets for several revolvers and the 642 was one of the easiest to work on. There are some great videos on YouTube that I would watch before trying any mods yourself. Don't forget some nice grips if your wife is going to let you keep it! ;-)

Guys,

I reveived the apex kit, All is good and put the plate back on and the cylinder doesnt want to spin ...

the devise that rotates the cylinder isn't working right. I have it in the grove of the plate .... No dice.

Any help

When you put the hammer back in are you sure you got all the parts back in the correct position? It's easy to get the "tips" of the contact parts matched up incorrectly and it will not work.
