Currently shooting Sierra 210 Gr JHP in front of 17 Gr of 2400 out of my 657 Hunter. Thinking about hunting deer with this handgun and the Sierra is extremely accurate but the Hornady
210 Gr HP XTP looks like a better choice for hunting and with 21.7 GR of WW 296 should give me 1350 FPS from my 657.
Before I spend the hard earned dough does anyone have experience with a load similar to the WW 296 and 210 Gr Hornady shown above ?

41 Mag Reloads

I have some records from some reloads that I chrono`d back in the 80s.As usual all the various disclaimers apply.Work up to your desired loads in stages and watch out for pressure signs. The loads in my guns-4" 57 and 6"57 seem safe.I am giving the 6" info as I have it.

21.5 WW296 CCI350 RPcases Sierra 210JHC=1340fps w/82ES,22SD
21.0 H110 " " " " =1276 " w/62" ,18SD

21.5 WW296 " RPcases,Horn 210JHP=1195 w/53" ,14"
21.1 H110 " WW " , " " =1168 91" ,25"

Sometime since "back then" I tried AA7 with the Sierra210 and CCI 300 primers and got very low extreme spreads and I noted "shoots good".If you have any of it it might be worth a try.Note:I used std. primers.
Hope this helps,John

No,I have not hunted deer with any handgun.I did shoot metallic silhouette with the 41 using the Sierra 210 and it was very accurate for that purpose...although the turkeys at 150 usually did me in.It seems I have read where the 210 Sierra is effective on deer...it would be my choice if given the chance. Why not use the XTP and 2400?

If it were me, I'd pick up a box of the XTPs and use your same 2400 load. My standard hunting load is the 210gr. XTP and 16.8 grains of 2400 in my Marlin 1894S (41 mag). I've found that load to be extremely accurate. In my 4" 657 I use the same 16.8gr. 2400 and a 200gr. Speer 1/2 jacketed SWC HP.

That said, if your 17.0gr of 2400 and the Sierra JHC is working for you, I'm sure it would be just fine on deer.

Keep us posted. I've shot several black bears with my .41's and hope to add a whitetail to that list soon.

PRK 25-5 Deer Huntin

Thanks Cush deer are at a premium in Pa since our Game Commission decided to manage them: bur bear are in good number

Here are some chrono results from my 6" M57. Shot on a warm day, probably around 80 degrees F. The 2400 did very well though the cases where new factory primed Winchesters and new cases seem to add some velocity to loads.

41 Mag Load Data

Thanks Steve: I copied your load data for reference. Right now I am contending with 24 in. of snow on the ground and wind without end. I have components for several new loadings and when weather allows I will break out the Crony and see what can be achieved. Looking for best combination of accuracy and bullet reliability for the 657 as I would like to carry it for deer and bear. I also have a Ruger S.S. with Bisley grips and a 5in barrel that was a ltd run for Davidson, and a Taurus Titanium Tracker. The Ruger shows promise. School is still out on the Taurus.Always on the look out for a nice 58 and an early Redhawk.Gotta love the 41 Mag
