New to forums i apoligieze in advance. Recent i purchased a NIB 686 + 4". It has absolutely zero rifling! Im not new to guns just wheelies. I called smith and pretty much she didnt believe me and said they would send a return shipping label. That was almost two weeks ago and havent recieved it yet. I purchased this over ruger cause i wanted a superior product. Is this what i should expect from S&W? I know shame on me ( and LGS) fpr not noticing it when i purchased it but im lokking for knicks and scratches and to see how she lines up. What im not looking for is to see if my pistol is legal to possess. Just curious if anyone has heard of similar situations and any advice on how to get it fixed in a timely manner? Please and thank you

a ha ill try. I can get a good pic i dont kno w how to upload it from the phone lol

That is one of those things that SHOULD NOT be possible, but since final inspections are (as far as I know) purely human if you got a "Monday morning" or "Friday evening" gun, you never know. IF you do enough of anything it will get screwed up once in a while.

That's why, back in the old days, they used to tell you to not buy a car that had been assembled first thing Monday morning (hangover) or last thing Friday night (want to go home) as it would be much more likely to have missed errors. It might even be true.

Even if we can see the first few inches of bore, would help. Partial bore pics aren't too hard to take it you don't illuminate too bright at the cylinder end, maybe one of those led lights with the flexible tube held back a bit in the barrel or at an angle.
For some reason, when I look at a gun I'm interested in buying, it's hard not to look down the bore. Even a new one.
After two weeks, I'd contact them about the return label. Don't they come by e-mail?
BTW, what state are you in? I take pics.

I remember a case like this being discussed here a couple of years ago. S&W immediately took care of it by replacing the gun. They would have as much interest as you do in making this right from a legal point of view, since they manufactured and shipped the gun. I'd call them back right away and talk to your LGS as well. I've gotten a few shipping labels from S&W over the years and they've always been e-mailed within minutes of hanging up the phone.

Welcome and sorry for your troubles. The factory will often email a return shipping label so I would contact customer service again, your request may have just gotten lost in the system. Not reassuring to you but in general the factory does a pretty good job of handling problems, as they should when they are selling short barrel shotguns :(. Please let us know how things turn out?

Daryl, sometimes I e-mail my pics from my phone to my computer to make them easier to work with. I download the pic from the e-mail into my download folder and then do what I want with it. Here is one of a 25-9 8-38 barrel.

Call S&W and have them send the return label by e-mail. You'll have it within a few hours. I've had to return a couple of things to S&W and I've always had the return label sent by mail.

Would like to see a picture of this, hard to believe it went out of the factory without rifling. Would be something to behold.

Not to nitpick, but a smooth bore revolver is not a short barreled shotgun (SBS), it's classed as "Any Other Weapon" (AOW). AOW has a $5 transfer tax, and SBS has a $200 transfer tax. Still illegal without being registered and having the transfer tax paid.

You’d think someone would take a peak down the barrel sometime before the finished gun is shipped!

Apparently not.

Although this is an uncommon defect, it does occur.

I’m stunned that Smith didn’t send a shipping label immediately.

Perhaps Smith sent it and your spam filter caught it: check your junk file.

In the late 70's I purchased a brand new Model 34. After close inspection, found it was a true smooth bore with not a hint of rifling. S&W immediately replaced the gun with an apologetic "red faced" letter. So it does happen, though rarely; send it back:o:o:)

Push it with S&W.
If truly no rifling, it's illegal for you to possess without going through the appropriate federal paperwork.
No point in taking chances on not getting "caught" with it.
You need to get it out of your possession.

And S&W should be all over it.

Thanks for all the immediate feedback. Really appreciated. Once i get back to my house i will make sure i get a picture on so you can all be amazed as i am. Definetly gonna take it bnback to the gun shop and get it off my hands. Hopefukly smith makes it right

If it's a recent enough buy to take back to the gunshop, that could be your best bet.

Even IF you get S&W to send you a shipping label, it can be several weeks before they take any action on it once they get it in their hands.

Maybe :). Here is the relevant information from the ATF website - it mentions a smooth bore revolver designed or redesigned to fire shotgun shells but not regular ammunition.

"For the purposes of the National Firearms Act, the term “Any Other Weapon” means:

Any weapon or device capable of being concealed on the person from which a shot can be discharged through the energy of an explosive;

A pistol or revolver having a barrel with a smooth bore designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell;

Weapons with combination shotgun and rifle barrels 12 inches or more, less than 18 inches in length, from which only a single discharge can be made from either barrel without manual reloading; and

Any such weapon which may be readily restored to fire.

Such term shall not include a pistol or a revolver having a rifled bore, or rifled bores, or weapons designed, made, or intended to be fired from the shoulder and not capable of firing fixed ammunition."

Hello I've heard that back in the day when the RCMP used revolvers there were supposed to be 400 that had no rifling, and are supposed to be still in the armory.

NO!!!!!
That'd put him in the act of transferring an illegal gun to another party, compounding the potential legal liabilities.

This ain't no stamp or coin!
