I'd like to put a compact top end on my 439 frame, sort of a "commander" hybrid. Will the double stack 3rd gen fit a single stack 2nd gen, any input appreciated.

I would like to see pictures when you get if put together.

Luckily I have a 3914 so this isn't a priority, but I do like my commander size 1911 and thought this would be a cool option for my little used 439. I did try the 3914 top end on the 439 and liked it, so if I can pick up the 6906 cheap enough pics will follow.

Smith actually did it during the transition to 3rd gen. PDs could trade in their 2nd gens, the factory would make the upgrades to the 2nd gen slides, fit them to the new 3rd gen frames. And the unofficial name really was Frankengun.

This is not my area, but a single-stack pistol slide may be too narrow to fit on a double-stack frame. I could see how a later (3906) slide may fit on a 439.

I'll try and remember to do this tomorrow. I have a 4906, a 6906, and a 439.

I have swapped slides on the 5906 and 6906. A long slide compact frame makes a good concealed rig for me.

I'm trying to do the opposite, double stack slide on a single stack frame, but the concern is the same.

I would really appreciate that, would make me feel better about buying the 6906 top end. Funny, I just swapped my 439 and 3914 and loved the full frame/short slide but wasn't crazy about the short frame/long slide,LOL. Guess we're lucky Smith gave the ability to do this.

Hybrid

I was able to install a 439 top end on my 3913NL without difficulty, so that I could have adjustable sights if I wanted. I was only into the slide for about $30, so I acquired the barrel, spring , bushing, and recoil guide at various times and put them together. Makes a nice little package and shoots well, and makes an easy switch back and forth.

YMMV
