$750 to spend-Which Jframe would you choose?

Since you have an Air Weight get a steel frame 2"-3" barrel S&W j frame. You can use the same speed loaders and even holsters.

Got this nice little Model 31 last month for $370. . .nickel and brand new in the box from 1976. I like the 32 with the Buffalo Bore ammo. You really can get 2 J Frames for the money you have to spend.

Dang, man! I would wager that gun is worth at least $800, given enough market exposure.

Uh, I'd just go to Bud's online and pick up one of their current COMBO specials...

A NEW S&W Model 637 and a Police Trade M&P40 with 3 X 15 round mags. for $659.00 + FREE SHIPPING!!!!!

But, that's just me...

Cheers!

I'd find a 649-3. Humpbacks are just as snag-free as your 442, are great fun to shoot single action at longer distances at the range, and the slightly longer ejection rod on the magnum model knocks 38 Special cases out a bit more reliably. The 649-3 has no lock, so that's not an issue. You already have an airweight for those times when you have to put the gun in a pocket instead of a holster, but a steel gun will carry just about as easily on a belt, and will be a lot more fun to practice with than the lightweight. (At least it would be for me.)

My daily carry is a 642 with CT grips. However, if you want a REALLY good shooting "J" frame I would suggest the 60-4. I bought mine when they first hit the market and have used it extensively in the field when bird hunting with a shotgun. I carried it cross draw where it was out of the way of the shotgun and I never knew I had it until it was needed. I took a considerable number of edible small game (grouse, cotton tail rabbits and snow shoe rabbits). It's quite nice to eat a rabbit or grouse with out having to pick shot out of your teeth (:>)). It is quite sporting but also practical. A decent shot can take the close shots in the head and use body shots if they are further off. I have taken them past 25 yards without issue. A full charge home cast wadcutter is generally my choice for this work. The 60-4 with it's 3" barrel and excellent target sights holds quite well with it's dbl underlugged barrel. Great piece all 'round and you won't often find another in the crowd.

Now, that is a most practical "J" frame IMO.

Another +1 to murphydog for this suggestion:

"If you want another .38 Special, a model 60-4 (3" adjustable sight) would be nice."

I couldn't agree more.

340PD. Best of both worlds. Sometimes when shooting it feels like you shook hands with the Devil but it's an awesome gun. I've see. Some sold on Gunbroker from 350-699.

Agreed that you could buy two at that price if you look long and hard enough.
The 640 9mmm suggestions are good. I'd also look into a nice 2" model 63 kit Gun. But this suggestion shows the greatest wisdom:

Find something under budget...have your love get something over budget...be patient...find something REALLY cool over budget down the road and she will not care!!

I hate jewelry personally. My wife loves it. I look at it as an investment for the future...she works really hard and I could care less what she spends...(when we were married I had to literally force her to by nice clothes for work). She's a keeper and so are the S&W's we both love over the last 20 something years. Don't buy just to buy...buy because you'll never part till death...just an old guy opinion.

All you younger guys take note. A good woman is worth her weight in gold and should be cherished. The problem is in finding a good one. :D

I really like my 649-3.

I probably overspent for it originally, but no regrets.

The $ I spent on it for a pro spring swap & action job was definitely a good investment too.

Smooth as it could possibly be for the cost of a couple of boxes of .38...
