908 rust?

how much of a problem is rust on a 908? new owner of a pristine 908. have not had rust on my other guns but would like to carry this when fly fishing in certain areas....

other than keeping it well oiled ,and dry, anything else I can do?

Only half of it will rust, as the frame is alloy, LOL!! The finish is fragile on that model, a few trips in and out of a holster will wear the sharp edges pretty fast. There was a version with a stainless slide, the 908s.

you can always send off just the slide to be refinished if it gets to the point where it's bothering you or it does start rusting.

You don't need to send in the entire gun if the frame is alloy and the finish on that part is not bothering you.

I'd check first with S&W and see if they can put a Melonite surface hardening treatment on it.

If not, there are other firms that can do melonite/tenifer kinds of treatments.

Alternately, other decent finishes include Robars NP3 and Birdsong's BlackT.

i had a 909 and the slide would get surface rust on the slide quite easily. My G/F at the time bought it (big mistake, really miss that gun).

I recently bought a 910 and it had very slight surface discoloration after a few days. Not really rusty, just the hint of it wanting to start.

If I had either today, I would not hesitate to sent the slides to CCR for a slide refinishing in a low maintenance finish.


P.S. That 909 had four factory 9rd mags, two I bought for $10 each and one (new in package) I got on egay for $3.25 shipped (in 2000, long before I ever knew I'd own a gun that it would fit).

Slight discoloration in my 908,looks like the start of some minor surface rust...you can't even see the logos anymore. Time for a re-finishing or blueing soon.
