This is a good thing to know about, although I am guessing (from the comments, and from reading this forum for some time) that this is not a very common problem.

I can't see anything you can do about it in terms of 'preventive maintenance.'

This happens very seldom. There is no way to know if it will ever happen to you. The only thing you can do is have a spare (preferably fitted) hand in your parts kit and put it in if the other one breaks. A backup gun is a good plan if you have more than one that would work for the match you're shooting. Different matches have different gun and other equipment requirements.
 
Sent on the 17th of September.....
Got it back yesterday, the 5th of October. Exactly 3 weeks.
All fixed. They paid for the shipping. They fixed it. The invoice looked like a long grocery list of things.
