This is the third time that model 29s have come into my possession as a pair. I don't know why the seem to show up that way, I'll easily go 6-8 months without seeing anything worth having.
The first one is a 29-4 3 inch unfluted. I have only seen pictures of these 3 inch guns. When my LGS said he was getting one in the first thing I said was how much? He said, well there's a catch. The left side of the gun is decent, the right side is a mess. The side plate was badly pitted and scratched beyond belief. When I saw the gun I was sick, such a collectable piece just basically ruined. I can't even bring myself to post pictures of it. The only way I saw this thing ever being right again was to have it sent back to the factory for a new fitted side plate and obviously a refinish. Was the gun really worth it though? I'd think it has more value as a decent shooter than it does all refinished up. Not to mention the bluing now surely wouldn't be the same as it was in 1989.
Anyways we did come to an agreement on the price but deep down I didn't feel real great. What I saw was the only chance I had to own a 3 inch 29 going out the window. I'd rather not take the chance of him listing it on GB for the slim possibility I could get it any cheaper and functionally the gun checked out perfect. The turn line is a little much but nothing else like endshake or forcing cone wear point to this thing being shot a lot.
That's when I posted the WTB here on the boards for a 29-4 or newer side plate. Well another SWCA member sent me a message that he had what I was looking for. It turns out it was exactly what I needed. He and I knew that a side plate was a gamble, that it might not fit so he offered to send it to me, without payment, to let me try it out.
Well it turns out it fit nearly perfect and the bluing is a spot on match. Honestly what are the odds? Yes you can tell a little, but I swear up and down that it's the best this gun has looked in a long time.
The next 29 is one that I picked up at a local show yesterday. It would also be the only classic 5 inch I've ever seen. It's a 29-5 and the seller came off the price $200! I never expect any one to give joe schmo off the street any kind of discount but it never hurts to ask. I was shocked nevertheless. I'm starting to feel like I get better deals Sunday afternoon at the gun show.
That is all for now. It was a good week of gun shopping for sure. Thanks for looking
