I played slow pitch softball for decades. During a break in a tournament, we went to lunch in a Hardee's. My friend, whom was a policeman had his Smith Model 60 in his waist band under his shirt. The place was packed. Standing in line the revolver slipped through his pants and hit the floor. Half of the people fled out the door. He pulled out his badge and said, "It's OK. I'm a cop." Then the other half ran out the door! The impact broke off the hammer spur. I told him I could replace it for less than $15. He was so tight he just had me smooth off the sharp edges. That was back in late '70s. He's still that tight with his coin today.

That's a good one. :D Years ago I took the spur off a M37 for one of our sheriff's deputies. He had the habit of peeling his overly generous tummy open a bit when he drew it and decided the spur had to go. I told him about the Centennial models but he was too cheap to buy one. His Model 37 was nothing much to look at.

Bad priorities. Softball is not as important as being properly armed, which most of time requires a properly fitting holster of some kind.

He didn't carry the revolver while we were playing. He stuck it in his waist band as we were going to the restaurant. BTW: Slowpitch softball is a manly man's sport.

You got it. I played on my church's team until I graduated from college and moved away to grad school. We played barehanded with a hard 12" ball. Catchers wore no masks or any other form of protection. Macho dudes, we were!

Wow. The softballs we have are only about 4" diameter. I can't imagine playing with one bigger than a basketball. I guess it would be easy to hit, though.

Well sir...I played "Church League" softball as a teenager and it was not slow pitch by any means. Our pitcher had a wicked low delivery that had him wearing the top off his trailing shoe. I had not played high school baseball, nor Little League as a kid, just sandlot baseball with local kids. Fast pitch is definitely a tough game, one of our neighbors growing up was a member of the local women's softball league, she was their pitcher. Her and her girlfriend would practice in her backyard and us kids were attracted to the fact that she wore what looked like a bra in the 50's. She finally asked if any of us would like to take a swing, that was my first experience at bat facing someone that could hurl a ball so fast you had to swing at where it left her hand. There is a song by some funny guy about "Church League Softball, Fistfight."

We used the same ball as you did, we just used a different scale of measurement. Back in those days, when we called softballs "12-inchers", we were referring to their circumference. Thus, they had 4" diameters, just like the ones you played with. They were rock-hard when new, but softened up after a game or two.

While on field maneuvers in Germany a few guys were out in a field throwing a ball around, pretty soon a bat showed up and before you know it we have two teams playing a great game of backyard baseball, all we had for a glove was our field cap. I had a good memory of the game because I was out in left field and one of the guys smacked one hard that was over the centerfielder, I ran hard to the center as the ball was arcing into the woods surrounding our "field", I made a diving catch that had me landing in the bush, I rolled up and had the ball in my cap. I never really had a great arm, so I ran out of the woods with the ball in hand, my guys were cheering...as I got within range I threw with all I had for home, someone had scored from 3rd and before he could realize what had happened he was tagged out.
