A NEW LOW IN THE RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE

********update********** ok so I stand corrected. I checked with my wife and apparently I do pay $20-$30 a drink sometimes. Lol what do I know. Check comes I pay it.

When my GI physician's assistant convinced me to lay off alcohol she did my liver and my wallet a big favor. And when I paid what I thought was a long price for a Rachel sandwich I decided to start making them myself.

I'm drinking unsweetened ice tea when I go out now. The one service club in town with a food service takes care of me by keeping a jug of unsweetened ice tea for me. To me that is making a special effort for me, so since I don't believe the servers should suffer financially for my medical issues, ...

That marks you out as living East of the Rockies. Unsweetened tea is the norm out here, a fact greeted with horror by people I knew who moved out here from FL and AL. Even so, just lately we've noticed a few fast food places are trying to tell you sweetened is the norm. I call that stuff cavities in a cup.

We can afford to eat out anywhere if we wanted to.

We don't.

I refuse to pay outlandish prices for food and drink.

Call me cheap, but I rather throw USDA Prime Certified Angus Beef strips on the grill, let Mrs. QD67 buy her German Reisling, and let me drink Paulander and Bushmill's Black Label.

I'm not including Chinese takeout, pizza, and Jersey Mike's.

But eating out today is not really worth it IMHO.

As a kid growing up in the '70s I remember going to McDonalds or A&W as a rare treat, even at less than $1 a burger. My folks would have fainted if you had suggested a $240 meal to them. Remember Eddie Murphy's routine about the green pepper onion burger on square Wonder bread? It's like he was in the car with us.:D

LOLOL!!!

Nobody ever reminisces about the wages FIFTY PLUS years ago!!!

Am yet another unsweetened tea drinker. Will put fake sugar in homemade lemonade.

My wife and I dropped in at a fancy beachside resort bar. My latest drink of choice is a Rusty Nail--scotch and Drambuie. I never pay the tab because I can't read the receipt. The Boss takes care of it. I had two Rusty Nails and asked her how much they charged. She said I didn't want to know. I did. They charged for the scotch and Drambuie separately. The scotch was $12, and the Drambuie was $15--per drink. Ouch. I usually pay from $7.50 to $12, depending on the place and Happy Hour. Bourbon and Coke next time.

It is not unusual for the two of us to run up a $100 tab at our favorite restaurant bar. Several drinks, several appetizers, dessert, etc. One evening we asked for our tab, and the bartender informed us someone else at the bar had picked it up. I didn't know a soul there, other than the staff. I don't think that person knew what they were asking for!

While I am sure you have earned and deserved all you have, and it seems you have a lot, why not just be thankful you get to enjoy the things you do?

I doubt the folks waiting on you could afford to go out and enjoy the same.

I am sure most of us work very hard to be able to enjoy the the things we do.
I also know at times I as a customer I will be charged a premium.

BUT there is a point where you may feel your being taken advantage of and it can feel offensive.

We still have unsweetened iced tea here in Pa. Been doing that the last 15 years here. I do miss the old lemonade days though growing up.

Last summer I went to the Italian section of Providence ( Federal Hill ) to an Italian restaurant. I asked for a glass of house chianti wine. 23.00 for about 5 ounces. Told the owner in a Google Review that my rear end will never grace one of his seats again.

I review everything now if it is really good or really bad

In the depths of the pandemic there was no single malt Scotch whisky to be had at any price. Leading up to the great Wuhan flu epidemic, both MacCallan and Balvenie were affordable at the local Costco sponsored liquor store, listing in the mid $30/bottle range for the mid-grades. When Scotch re-appeared it was up substantially. I shall never forget ordering MacCallan 12 in a restaurant two years ago and paying $34 for a single pour. Prices have ebbed a bit, but not much. I'm dabbling in the lower price print Scotch these days.

I have yet to enter an establishment with a liquor license that had a drink list with question marks where the prices are.

My wallet knows what to expect.

No drinks price list at all on the menu where the wife and I went for Valentines day dinner. It happens.

Paid $48.00 for two premium drinks, vodka sour and my wife's rum drink..:D
It is what it is.

We had a great time, great food and will happily go back again for hopefully another great dinner. Of course I will not likely order drinks again. I don't mind paying $50+ dollars for drinks but was was hoping I might have more than one.
