A NEW LOW IN THE RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE

Alcohol turns me into land mine so I avoid it. We eat out once a week and it's usually good. The money I save on drinks goes into the tip. I really would avoid eating out, not because of the food or service, but because I don't trust others making my food. We like "Season's 52" (an upscale Darden rest) where you can watch your food being made if you like. I don't watch but appreciate the ability. Joe

That marks you out as living East of the Rockies. Unsweetened tea is the norm out here, a fact greeted with horror by people I knew who moved out here from FL and AL. Even so, just lately we've noticed a few fast food places are trying to tell you sweetened is the norm. I call that stuff cavities in a cup.

Dentists and glutide manufacturers love Halloween and sweet tea drinkers. :)

I quit buying any alcoholic beverages shortly before I retired almost 13 years ago.
I had gone to lunch with some friends on my lunch break and was returning to work when some nitwit used the right turn lane to pass me in an intersection. Luckily the lane to my left had a space for me to move over.
I figured I would have gotten the blame since I had been drinking plus the prices were getting out of hand.
I seldom drink at all any more but if I do it is at home.

Sweet tea done right is the nectar of the gods.

It's the big wedge of lemon that does it...not the bottled lemon juice but a big ole hunk of lemon. I do on occasion use maple syrup as the sweetener, I make it, so I have lots to use.
And I'll also add...I love sweet tea, grew up on it, drink lots of it...I have all my teeth, no cavities, perfect shape. Its called brushing your teeth.

Here’s the thing some folks are missing. U go out. U have a great time. You pay. When the mood strikes you do it again. It’s all about the experience. Now I wish prices were lower, sure. But you had a good time with someone or some group….,.. just remember. Some people would call blowing through $100 worth of ammo in 60 min a complete waste of money. We all make choices.

We can afford to eat out anywhere if we wanted to.

We don't.

I refuse to pay outlandish prices for food and drink.

Call me cheap, but I rather throw USDA Prime Certified Angus Beef strips on the grill, let Mrs. QD67 buy her German Reisling, and let me drink Paulander and Bushmill's Black Label.

I'm not including Chinese takeout, pizza, and Jersey Mike's.

But eating out today is not really worth it IMHO.

Same here. If we dine at home we can eat better food off real china using real silver, drink better wine served properly using the correct stemware, and avoid having our evening ruined by loudmouth morons at the next table - all for a fraction of the price of dining out. Sure, it's fun to be served and have someone else do the dishes, so we go out very occasionally, but we know we're going to be disappointed and, sure enough, we always are.

I had an Old Fashioned at one of the local established restaurants here where the "old money" crowd goes on a regular basis. $40, and that is why we go there once a year.

My wife is a very talented cook. The older I get the more I prefer her food to restaurant food anyway.

Maybe I'm the only one noticing this but I have noticed that as the price of restaurant food goes up The quality of the food is going down. Not just the serving size But The food quality is getting worse.

Are you saying you literally can’t go anywhere and not be disappointed?

Can't be doing all that mucking about unless it is for a very special occasion. Guess I spent too much time as a bachelor.

Glad I don't live in FL. Around here last week, family run Sicilian restaurant: Jim Beam Old Fashioned-$8.00, Linguini with Red Clam Sauce-$10.00

Am yet another unsweetened tea drinker. Will put fake sugar in homemade lemonade.

This thread has suffered a significant deterioration - from alcohol beverages in the original post to sweet tea; but while on that subject, sweet tea remains nasty. Probably consumed by folks that also like ranch dressing, Miracle Whip, and Velveeta ( the one that some call cheese).

That should continue the thread deterioration.

I happen to like reuben and rachel sandwiches. One day I got wind that a bar/restaurant just over the state line was featuring them, so I went down to check it out. The sandwich was great, but I was really appalled at the price.

Somewhere along the line my sister gave me a set of Calphalon(TM) skillets. I got to thinking about what went into a reuben or rachel sandwich, and pretty soon the wheels started turning. Seeing these new skillets, I realized I could be making these sandwiches myself. So I did. With a little calculation I figured I could make 4 or 5 rachel sandwiches for what I paid for 1 in the restaurant.
