Ever since seeing 007 replace his ppk with the P99, I always wanted one.

When I learned that Walther has discontinued the P99 for 2021, I found a brand new one (2021 manufactured) P99AS all German made.

Fit and finish are outstanding. The slide, inside and out, is machined to perfection, and I cannot find a single tooling mark.

The polymer frame is well designed. My only complaint is that the removable backstrap has a tiny amount of wiggle at the top, but this cannot be felt when holding the gun in a firing grip.

It’s the perfect size and weight for both concealed carry and duty type use. The AS features is what I prefer (basically a DA/SA with decocker).

It’s become one of my favorite handguns (and I have a lot of favorites to choose from).

Anyone else a fan of this one?

How does durability over the long term compare with other comparable models (beretta, sig, hk)?

My first-hand experience is too limited to say anything authoritative about a durability comparison.

But variants of the P99 are the second-most issued current German police pistol, after the HK P30. My former home state, Germany’s largest population-wise, has had the P99 DAO in use since 2005 with no issues I‘m aware of, and I pay some attention to such things.

Wondering how the S&W 99 compares to to the all-Walter. On the Smith veresion the frame is Walther, the slide and stuff are S&W. I'll assume the Smith is cheaper?

I have a 1999 P99 and a 2004 SW99 - I find them to be virtually identical in most respects.

In Casino Royale, the D Craig version, he went away from the PPK, but in subsequent movies I believe he went to the PPK/S. In .380

I've never heard of a P99 failing or breaking down from ordinary use, not even in .40cal, so I reckon that its durability is no cause for concern, probably just as good as any of its contemporary competition.

I’ve had a lot of guns in my time, but the P99 is the last one I would ever get rid of. When I finally got one I immediately sold several Glocks and never regretted it. Mine has been a Glock-free household ever since discovering the P99.
