I have a Model 41 PC that I see "tipping" on many shots with a clean barrel and CCI Standard Velocity ammo. I sent it to Smith & Wesson and they returned it with some test targets saying the 1 inch to 1.25 inch group at 15 yds. was acceptable accuracy. So I got with a shooter from our Bullseye group and tested it in a Ransom Rest. At 25 yrs. 9 of 10 were in a two inch group with one flyer about 2.75 inches. Then I tested it at 50 yds. twice in the Ransom Rest and got a 3.5 inch group and a 4.5 inch group with the same CCI Standatd Velocity ammo. If I mathematically expand their 15 yd. test to 25 and 50 these all seem pretty consistent. However no one I shoot Bullseye with seems to believe this is acceptable for a Model 41 except Smith. Before I send it back again I wanted to know what accuracy level a typical user experiences when the tests his Model 41 and if you have any ideas how I approach Smith & Wesson to convince them this is a premium target pistol not just a 22 "plinker".

Well I don't think that the factory will be of any help . Seeing that they already sent it back stating that accuracy was acceptible . As I stated in your earlier thread send it to Alex Hamilton for a reline . It'll be money well spent & the gun will be competitive or sell it & buy something else . 3 1/2 to 4" out of a rest @ 50yds is totally unacceptible in my book
I use CCI std in mine and shot bullseye for abt 10-12 yrs.. With a red dot on the 41, it will shoot a 10 round group abt the size of a nickel off the top of my shooting box. This is with old eyes and my red dot looks like a small peanut. The PC model 41 is a very nice looking gun. Larry

A 3 1/2" group is totally unacceptable at 50 yards.
It should not be the CCI sv, as already said, worth a try of something else.
I myself will not use a gun that cannot group in the 10 ring for the competition its is intended, not saying I can shoot that well only I want the error to be me and not the gun. Here is the original 41 flyer, 10 ring at 50 yards as pointed out.
I would send it back to S&W quoting their own website.

Used by national level competitors for acute precision in competition, the Model 41 is considered one of the best .22 target pistols ever manufactured." There is no way a "national level competitor" would use a gun with a 3 1/2" group.

I've owned a M41 since 1979 and have for the most part used Hi Velocity ammo in it and have been able to shoot 1.25" - 1.5" groups at 50 feet off hand. Just a few weeks ago I shot it with Remington Target standard velocity ammo and was able to tighten up the groups about 1/4 - 1/2" better than with the Hi velocity ammo. I just last week got some CCI standard velocity ammo and can now shoot 1" groups at 50 feet off hand (with maybe 1 flyer out another 1/4")
I have also tried some Eley competition grade ammo in the pistol and shot worse than with the hi velocity stuff ????? For some reason my M41 doesn't like the Eley but neither does my .22 Target Rifle.

1 1/2" groups at 25 yards indoor or outdoor all day long on a rest with CCI SV and a red dot. About 9-10 years ago I had one of my 41's repaired at Smith (had to pay for parts but labor was free) and asked for as accurate as possible. When I got the gun back had about 2 lb trigger and shot 1 1/2" groups at 25 yards.

My heavy barrel 41 will shoot one ragged hole out of my Ransom rest at 25 yds. With Super X yellow box or Eley TenX with the Eley being slightly better. It will shoot better than X ring at 50 yds. Same ammo scenario on a 50 yd. Bullseye target. I've tried many brands of ammo with varying success but the two mentioned are the best I've found so far. I would post photos of the tests I ran but I moved since doing them and can't presently lay my hands on the targets.

I would have expected accuracy of a Model 41 to at least equal that of a Ruger Mk II. The day my Mk II won't hold 2" at 50 yards I'll chunk it in the trash and buy a new MK III. Or I'll send it back to Ruger and see what their standards are.
