Adam12

Randolph Mantooth was in two episodes of Adam 12. Reason to Run in 1971 and Lost and Found in 1972

Jack Webb appeared to be a loyal guy. If you watched his shows, many of the same actors showed up in them ex: Bobby Troup, William Boyett, Tim Donnely, Kent McCord, Marco Lopez to name a few.

But the number one had to be Virginia Gregg, she played numerous characters across all of Jack Webb Mark VII Ltd productions.

Edit: quick check at IMDB: 14 episodes Dragnet, 6 episodes Adam-12, 6 Episodes Emergency, all as different characters except appeared twice in Emergency as the same nurse character.

Virginia Gregg was also a voice actress for many years...notably for Hanna-Barbera. She voiced "Tara" in the original Herculoids cartoon back in '67

I watched Dragnet episodes as a kid in the mid-to-late 50s, long before they were shown as re-runs. All of us from that era of early, crudely produced, and limited TV shows have to remember that were few TV channels and not all that many program choices. As a result, many of us would watch anything.

Even long ago, anyone, even a youngster could spot Joe Friday as being a bit too stoic and much too devoted to the job; not anything like most real people. Sure, there may have been a few actual cops that acted like Joe Friday, but extremely few.

I've attempted to watch the old Dragnet re-runs in recent years, but find them truly horrible and couldn't get past the first few minutes. Dragnet hasn't fared well over the decades.

I am still watching Adam 12 for a few hours every night, and still think it's great. Now you guys have given me more cop show recommendations. Thanks.

"The Blue Knight" mini series with William Holden,Lee Remick, and Sam Elliott is terrific and you can watch it on youtube right now.George Kennedy took over when it became a regular series.

I barely remember Adam 12 from when I was a kid (I would have been about 8 when it went off the air). I saw a couple of episodes on MeTV but it conflicted with something that my wife likes to watch. So as I mentioned above I talked her into buying me the entire series on DVD and I've been watching it and I actually remember some of the episodes.

So I went back and look at some of the other shows that I barely remember from the early 70s. I found Police Woman, Hawaii Five-0 (The original), SWAT and Starsky &Hutch And I was really surprised that SWAT and Starsky & Hutch just don't hold my interest. Police Woman and Hawaii Five-0 have actual story lines and plot twists that make you think. Starsky & Hutch seems like the Gran Torino is the star of the show and SWAT everything in the episodes is all just lead up to them going tactical.

I never saw an episode of "Starsky and Hutch" or "SWAT". The short clips advertising these shows was enough to tell a viewer that neither program was worth watching. Lots of bad shows generally during that era, but maybe the same could be said for all other periods as well.

Has "NYPD Blue" been mentioned? Easily the best of the police shows for those interested in realism. "Police Story" wasn't too far behind it and then there was "Hill Street Blues", also pretty good.

Does anyone recall that Ben Alexander was Friday's second partner?

I agree with so many of the comments about Adam-12 and also Emergency!. One of the more interesting things with Adam-12 was the range of calls that Malloy and Reed got from the ridiculous and nonsense such as when a little old lady wanted them to fix the reception on her TV because missing her "stories" was an emergency call to her and she was demanding the service part of "To protect, and serve" on up to the deadly serious and everything in between. Those old patrol cars they had are ones that I enjoyed seeing. Malloy describing the car.

Another of the old Mark VII Limited shows I remember from those days that many either never heard of or has forgotten was O'Hara, U. S. Treasury.
