I just picked up the 686 SSR that I bought on Gunbroker. The gun looks great except for a couple nicks on the front sight mount. It looks like someone hit it with a punch while installing the hi-viz sight.

The gun has the "frosted" stainless steel finish (not polished). Does anyone have advice on how I could repair the damage?

Someone dinged it adding a fire sight, buff it smooth & lay fine sandpaper on it & tap w/ a soft mallet.

My 686SSR has the plunger style sights that are easily replaced. I thought all did so I wonder why anyone would feel the need to drive out the pin. Also mine has a roll pin. If your revolver is like mine I think Bubba has struck again on the sight replacement. Incorrect installation.

If it bothers you (as it would me), it can be repaired. I foolishly loaned a shooting acquaintance my T/C Encore ProHunter muzzleloader a fear or so ago and he dropped it on a rock, scarring the barrel. It also has a bead-blasted finish but my gunsmith was able to fill the gouge and refinish the repair area so it is undetectable.

Scotoma! You'll get used to it shoot it and love it!

My SSR gets used I'm not aware of any such "defects" when shooting all I see are the sights! Well most of the time!

I have a Ruger M77 with a ding in the barrel from a friend whose gun wacked mine while at rest when climbing over some logs. His gun slipped and "ding"! An artifact of life!

A few months later he was killed when the engine fell off the passenger jet in that famous crash outside Chicago!

Smiles,

It does bother me but there are worse things in life. I'm itching to shoot it as soon as I can find some ammo!
