Advice on gun for the wife.

Gad, unless she is going to carry it and shoot from a pocket, I would think you want to stay away from the 442/centennial class of J Frames. If you are set on a J frame, I suggest a 3" bbl model 60-from what I have heard this is more of a "have it in the shop" gun then a "wear it concealed" gun. From what I have been able to glean from your post, she isn't going to be carrying it concealed but is going to have it within reach at the shop, or in hand to and from the car. If that is the case I suggest a K frame 38 over a J frame, #1 for the extra size and #2 for the extra round. A J frame is nice but a lot harder to shoot than a k frame. Just my ramblings.......

Maybe in her purse. Maybe she needs two.

I appreciate all the great advice. We ended up getting a S&W Airweight 38 with pink grips. It also came with black so if for some reason she ends up not liking it I'll keep it in my glovebox. Shes dry fired it a few times and really likes it so far.

We almost bought the Charter Arms Pink Lady. We both like the looks of the CA guns. My get me a blue or stainless version.

I'm hooked myself. I'll be buying at least one more for myself. A revolver this time. Just not sure which one. CA is coming out with a rimless model that locks pretty nice.

Main thing is let her choose the one she likes.

+1. Lots of good suggestions on this thread, like starting out with a .22 until she's comfortable. The J-frame is always a pretty good choice, as are some of the 9mm pistols like the smaller Kahrs.

(BTW- 5'2" 130 sounds just fine to me! Hopefully, she's not too senitive about things like that.)

I would have to respectfully disagree with starting out with a 22. I know too many people that started off with 357, 38, 9mm etc. Some under the age of 12. It's really not that big of a deal for most people to fire a 38. Maybe I made her appear too timid. She's actually pretty tough, just a little apprehensive right now and I can certainly understand why.

She's going to carry a .38 so that is what she needs to be comfortable and confident with. I was range NCOIC a few times in the military so I'm sure we'll be fine. And speaking of the military they don't start people off with .22 caliber.

Also, not a single CWP instructor we've spoken with has said anything about starting with a smaller caliber. In fact they all like the gun we decided on very much and said we made a very good choice. The shop we bought this from said they got 125 of these in about a week ago and only 5 were left when we bought ours. Sheesh!
