If you are talking about a hammer 38 S&W, 5 shot revolver, it would have shipped around 1884, so it would be classified as an antique. If not, let us know more details about what you have . . . oh . . . and pictures.
The proper name for this gun is a 38 Double Action, Second Model. The company made over a half-million from 1880 to 1911. The Second Model was made from 1880 ro 1884, with serial number range from 4001 to 119,000.
I will again attempt to add photos as I now have them on my desk top and in photo bucket . My original posts were in an attempt to learn a little for a trade on this revolver , and I now have my hands on it . It has red and black plastic grips although one has a piece missing .
My biggest question is the frame has a serial number 92XXX and the cylinder has a serial number 163XXX . The cylinder is of the third model style but the trigger appears to be second model . Does that make any sense ?
The pistol finish is patina to blue and the bore has sharp lands and grooves with 5 or 6 areas of pitting . I think it will make a fine shooter .
Lock up is acceptable and timing seems fine.
