Has anyone else noticed that the recent Shield alert generated considerably more drama and/or negative attention than the XDS recall? Within hours of S&W releasing their statement many of the more popular YouTube personalities had posted warnings on their channels, and news of the alert seemed (by my reckoning) to spread rapidly through the blogosphere and forum communities. Contrast this with the XDS recall, which in comparison appears to be much more dramatic and potentially dangerous, but hasn't received much press at all. Is this due purely to popularity and ownership numbers or is there some sort of bias out there against S&W? Still waiting for Cabelas to get their stock back so I can get mine in nine.

Probably a combination of perception and popularity of the M&P.

Among other factors, there are always going to be those that like to see the King of the Hill get knocked off and for those that couldn't find a Shield, didn't want to put in the effort to find one or didn't want to wait, the Safety Allert made them feel better about purchasing something else.

Most of those personalities are Glock fanboys and Glock fanboys feel threatened by the M&P (for whatever weird reason, as both are fine platforms), I don't think they feel threatened by XD's.

The more popular the item, the more attention it gets. This is true for most things.
And to think... The XD-S, with all its 1st year problems, got voted Gun of the Year, over the Shield, which had much fewer/less severe problems than the XD-S... I'm still wondering how much money SA used to buy that title.
While I do like the regular XD and XDM lines, I can still call a spade a spade and recognize that the Shield and it's Safety Alert is nowhere near as big a deal as the XD-S's 'Possible Full-Auto' Safety Recall.

Only from Glock lovers and people that can't find a Shield. No big deal with mine - trigger lever works perfectly. My XDS went back yesterday and it will be home soon with a new squeeze safety. Not a big deal.

Eh. None of the **** bloggers/vloggers say bug me. I could care less about who says more or less about the pistol I chose. I like mine and it's flawless.

Getting voted "gun of the year" means about jack squat. SA probably spent more money advertising than S&W did, which explains why the XDs would win. Shields probably out sell the XDs 10 to 1 or more.
The haters will hate i have two shields both mfg Jan 2013. Both fine. Given the choice of a gun that MAY go off IF I drop it vs one that may go off when loading a round or go full auto if I pull the trigger. Ill take the drop chance. I tend to hold on to my gun.

Same at the gun shop at my shooting range. I'm pretty much and in and out 2-3 times a week shooter. I've overheard at least 3 people asking about the Shield and the shop can't keep them in stock. I don't have one but I know they're a very well sought after conceal carry.
I didn't know that is was a competition. It is beyond me how people think one gun is better than all others.
Both the Shield and the XDS are good firearms. The Glock is a good firearm. It is simply a matter of preference.

I noticed it too. I think it definitely falls under the Haters Gonna Hate category. I think there are quite a few people who got frustrated when they could not find and Shield and are bitter about it.
The XDS is a fine gun. Packed my Dad's up today to go back to SA...then went an ran more flawless rounds through my Shield 9.

Not saying the shield is the best gun ever. I know for me I knew I wanted one after reading up on it. I bought my first one before Id ever even held or seen one. Once I got it and tried it I knew Id chosen wisely. After three months of trying others like the Nano and Walther as well as other my wife settled on a 40 shield as well. Both are A-OK as per the test and I have no regrets with them. BTW I own several other handguns but I prefer to carry my Shield IMO it is the best suited firearm for CC.

Aug 26, 2013 S&W announced they secured a 5 year contract with LA County Sheriff Dept which is the world's largest sheriff Dept with 13,000 sworn and non sworn employees issued a side arm.
Misery loves company and Glock and other major gun manufactures just took one on the chin loosing the contract for the biggest Sheriff Dept in the World to M&P.
Naturally, those wallowing in their loss will rejoice with a set back from the company that just kicked them into the mud.
Take it as a complement S&W is receiving so much attention over an isolated Shield trigger. Truth in politics, religion etc will always receive criticism and the truth is M&P in the eyes of LA County Sheriffs office is a superior weapon to the Glock or for that matter any major manufacture of semi auto handguns otherwise M&P would not have secured the contract.

I see gun "snobbery" all the time on the internet. Some brands seems to generate more of it than others and to me it's quite tedious and a waste of time.
Guess it is no different than the ford versus chevrolet versus dodge that has gone on for as long as I can remember. Frankly I like quite a few brands and there a few brands that will never make it in my ownership.
I like both S&W and SA handguns, but the shield was too "thin" in my grip so I opted to get the 9c while I also have a XDS in 45.
That said, I think both companies are handling their issues properly and that is all we can ask for.
In comparison, do some googling on the Remington model 700 trigger issue. My wife's grandfather's example we inherited had this issue. While testing for it, it was pretty disconcerting to manipulate the safety and when taking the safety off you hear the action go off. In order to unload the rifle, you had to take the safety off first. The "fix" was to make it so you could run the bolt with the safety on. It really didn't fix the issue, but was more of a work around.
To get the so called fix, we had to pay to ship it in and pay again to get the "fix" applied. Now that particular issue had several deaths attributed to it and IMO, that should have been handled as a recall, but never was. I have not bought anything else from the Remington brand because of how they handled that issue.
Am thankfully we have choices we can make.

Not this owner. I got the Shield because I liked the 8 other VERY reliable M&P's I own. I had my Shield on order as soon as they were advertised,sight un-seen). Not to mention a few nice Colts and High Standards I also have. NO Glucks in my collection though.
