Hello everybody.
Once again I need your advices. A friend will spent his holidays in Virginia, and it's an opportunity to order an Altamont grip for my 586-3, not imported in France. I know that the Nill grips are better with German quality but I like the look of the Altamont firm.
Well my 586-3 is a square butt, but I would like order a grip of the "Altai serie", this serie is a conversion square and round butt and could be ok for my 586. I read that the square butt is more stable for a 6 inches and the conversion or round butt are better for 4 or less.
Could you tell me your opinion about my choice, because I never seen pictures of a 586 with a Altai grip. I like too the original grip with the SW medaillon produced by Altamont too.
Last thing, the delivery is quick by Alatamont ?
Thank you.

I think the Altai style will go well with your 586. While I don't personally have experience with that particular Altamont grip style, I am a big fan of Altamonts and own at least 3 sets. I think they are very good quality grips and reasonably priced. As far as shipping goes, their turn around time is not bad as long as they have in stock, already produced, the grip you ordered. I seem to remember waiting around a week, maybe a day or two more, with that scenario but if they don't have them in stock and have to make them to fill your order, the wait time will be at least 2 weeks I would think.

Ragnarok, I am a fan of Altamont's as well, I have close to a dozen sets.

I have a set of Super Rosewood Bateleur Altamont grips on my 6" nickel 586-1, I love these grips!

The S&W medallions are nice, but they will fool no one into thinking that they are original.

I have a set of the Altai grips too, I do not think that these are going to work for your square butt 586. These are made for round butt guns to give the grip feel of a square butt.

Here they are on my 686-CS-1

I think that you need to look in the K/L frame square butt section.

Smith & Wesson K/L Frame Square Butt Revolver Grips | Altamont Company

RJM6120 is correct on the ship times from Altamont. If it is in stock, it will ship right away, if they have to make it, two weeks or so. They will send you an email and give you options if it is out of stock. They have always taken less time to make an out of stock item then their initial time estimate.

Thank you for your quick answer. I don't take the risk to order a Altai grip, I ll stay with the square butt serie by Altamont, because the feeling could be different with a round butt. On my 586 I have the ugly Hogue grip on rubber, no class.
I have read that the Altamont grips are thinner in the hand than original it's true or not ? different feeling ?
@Glashaus your grip on your 686 is amazing, I think I ll order this one.
The delivery is quick if the item is in stock ..nice.
I join the fan of Altamont because the grips are really nice.
Thanks

The Bateleur grips are thinner then target grips, they have a curve to them almost like the coke bottle grips, they also have slight finger grooves. These grips feel great shooting my 586 with both .38 Specials and .357 Magnum rounds, super control.

I totally agree with Mike SC Hunter, the Altamont target grips are too thin and long, they do not give the same feel as original S&W factory grips, the Bateleur and other Altamont grips that I have feel great, most of the others are Service grips, I do have a few sets of the Combat grips, both regular and boot .

Glashaus is right, the Altai is for round to square. Did you notice the checkered Fleur-de-Lis on his grips. That would be right at home in France. ;)

I'm not an Altamont lover I have them on one gun a jframe & the fit is less than good. I have Ahrends on the rest of my revolvers. Real wood & unsurpassed fit. I realize time is of the essence for you & the website that everyone used to get them from has had just a few to choose from for quite a while now. Good luck hope you get some you like & fit your hands well.

These may be an option that would work for you. They are Herrett square butt target stocks. Can find them reasonably priced used on ebay. I prefer them a little darker myself. Quite comfortable. A little smaller than factory target stocks. My 586 no dash. Bob

Your choice but I like Eagle grips better.....More faithful to the originals....Altamonts are usually too thin and too long for me on magnum revolvers.........

Thinner mmhh that's right, but my glove size is only 7
Eagle grips .... never heard... it's not the same price, higher quality ? but I can explore a new direction, I m very happy of your advice thanks

Yes yes I have seen the "fleur de lis" but im as the Frank emperor Charlemagne, one leg in France and another one in Germany, Im over the Rhine ....I like the German eagle too

Once again never heard from Herrett, another direction to explore Thank you.

The Eagle grips are very high quality, similar of the German Nill I think it will be my choice they seems to be wonderful ...Ill wait to purchase one and stay with my Hogue rubber. You know I have not yet my 586 at home, my file to have the revolver at home is since last week in the French administration bureau. It(s a long way ...one year to have this authorisation in France.

I have many sets of Altamont grips for all sized frames. Fit is spot on on everything. Very high quality. They are S&W goto company for most of their custom grips and most of the fancy grips.

Altough my 586 doesn't wear them,I have done business with them twice.First for my Python and second for my S&W 629.In both occasions, the delivery was quick(even if I live in Canada where mail, like everything government owned is snailslow)and second, they fit perfectly without any sloppy gap anywhere.IAnd the price is right

I've been looking at a set of those grips for a 686. How far do they go past the bottom of the grip frame, and do they cover the back strap?

Thanks!

I have (3) sets of Altamonts and another set on the way I ordered Saturday; a stock set for my round butt "N" frame... the combat grips in Rosewood. Shipping has taken anywhere from a week to almost 3 weeks from the time of order to door delivery. But every stock set was worth the wait.

3 sets are the combat stocks but I do have a pair of Altai grips on my "J" frame in Super Walnut. They make shooting +P's out of the pistol more than bearable and standard pressure loads are just above ***** cat status in the recoil department. They take a round butt grip and make it feel perform like a square butt gripped pistol. However, you said you have a square butt pistol so the Altai's won't fit your pistol. You'll have to order something/style grip that is made for your square butt revolver.

Edit: I see you are already aware that the Altai's won't fit... Altamont grips are nice pretty nice OP. My semi auto's all wear VZ grips. However, VZ is starting to make some really comfortable, very good looking, heavy shooter friendly grips as well for "J", "K", "L", & "N" frames both round and square butt frames included.

Just posted this on another thread. These are my Altamont grips. Square-butt look on a J-frame round-butt.
