AMMO TALK

I purchased a M&P 15-22 in April; the owner's manual is copyrighted 2009 & does not mention the "Not Recommended" or "Recommended" lists in the current ©2010 manual. The spring on top of the bolt is silver, not blue. I gather there have been problems observed with some ammo which Smith & Wesson attempted to correct with modifications to the recoil spring & ejector.

What is the time line for these modifications and which would a M&P 15-22 made Feb-March 2010 have?

I fired about 250 Remington GB loads & had several Failures to Fire. I only pulled I bullet & saw most of the priming compound was missing; others fired on a second strike; some never fired. I put these failures to bad ammo.

I honestly can't really give you an exact timeline as to when the modifications were made since I don't really know myself so I'm hoping someone else will chime in if they know. But, if you've got the original manual chances are your rifle has neither the revised spring set nor revised extractor installed.

I know that others have used ammo on the Not Recommended list without issues and some even claim that Remington GB is the bees knees regarding ammo. However, that said an equal number of users who have used ammo on the Not Recommended list have suffered everything from OOB (read: out-of-battery) discharges to blown extractors which was passed along to S&W and why they do not recommend it's use in all current revisions of the manual.

While I'm not sure if S&W would ever deny a warranty repair claim if it was found the user was using Not Recommended ammo I do not think I'd wish to find out myself.

Ladyfox,

From what I've read, there have also been a lot of OOB's, FTF's, and FTE's using the recommended ammo. It's not just a non-recommended ammo thing.

I would think that S&W would find it very difficult to deny warranty involving non-recommended ammo if that ammo meets the SAAMI specs for 22 LR. Also, with S&W customer service's positive attitude, I would be very surprised if they would refuse warranty because of using ammo on their non-recommended list. Note, it's their recommendation for what and what not to use, not their requirement for warranty.

If I gave the impression that ALL rimfire ammo was perfect that was not my intention. But, were it me, I'd shy away from anything the vendor said was not a good idea to use since I've no desire to turn my baby into a scrap pile that and I absolutely despise the goo, or whatever that gunk is, that Remington puts on their ammo. *shudder*

As far as S&W denying the claim I just mentioned it was a possibility not that it would have been a good idea for them to do so. However, you do have a good point in that I don't think it is a condition regarding the warranty.

Had another fun time at the range testing out my different ammos this time out to 50 and 100 yards. I used my same 25YD zero with the 3-9X42 optic on a stable benchrest. I already tested these ammos at 25 yards but wanted to see how they did with a 25yd zero at 50-100yards as far as bullet drop and of course group sizes. Turns out at 50 it is still pretty much at zero but at 100 there is noticeable bullet drop. 10 shot group sizes are measured center to center of two furthest holes; flyers included. Bullet drop measurment is the average drop of the group. Here are the different loads I tried and the photos:

Federal 550 Bulk Pack
Winchester 333 Bulk Pack
Winchester Super X .37 Grain High Velocity Hollow Point
CCI Mini-Mag .36 Grain Hollow Point
CCI Mini-Mag .40 Grain Round Nose
CCI Stinger Hyper Velocity

So is the general concensus that Win 555 and Fed 550 are ok to shoot? My serial # is DTA and the only bullets I've tried are the Rem Gold bulk which was a total disaster with many FTF and FTE stove pipes. Luckily no
OOB's.

I have shot about 2000 rnds of the federal 36 grain copp plated hp load 750 and 500 rnds of federal lighting 40 grain soft nose and have had 2 ftf (firing pin struck but no bang) an 1 oob. Price is right just bulk ammo hiccups

went to the range yesterday and fired over 500 rounds of federal ammo without one misfire. My brother was shooting his new .22 walther and he had some Winchester Expert ammo which is what I used when I had the OOB that knocked off the extractor on my gun. I shot a few of the Winchesters with zero misfires as well.

I'm confident that my 15-22 would shot what ever ammo I feed it.

anyone tried the winchester 555 walmart pack? only $20. Says "1280fps velocity, 36 grain plated hollow point"

I went to wally world to pick up some of those winchester super-x rounds suggested in the manual, but the only ones in stock were very similar, Winchester XpertHV high velocity. Possible same round as ^above^ since it is also 36gr 1280fps.

Anyone have experience with this? I just ordered my magpul mp15-22, and these will be the first thru.

I just saw an episode of Guns & Ammo that featured a CCI 22LR round made for the AR style rifles on the market now. It was basically a standard velocity 40 grain copper round nose bullet. The box had the image of an AR rifle printed on it, and it looked to be a bulk pack. Has anyone seen any of these?

And i believe you might be talking about the silver boxed ones, which could be these: I have never seen them before at walmart. curious, what was the price?

seems like the tips have at least different plating.

after a little research i believe the silver boxed packs are probably "old" and no longer carried, likely replaced by the 555.

in other news, does anyone use CCI velocitor? Seems like a high quality ammo, but runs about $55 for 500. I'd buy it as break-in ammo if its really good, but i haven't heard anything about it here on 15-22. other forums really seem to love it. for break ins everyone seems to recommend CCI anyway.

Yep that exact box. They were $19.83 after tax for the 500. The casings are stamped super x on the bottom, so Im just totally confused. Darn it, wally suckered me out of 55 extra rounds!

let me know how they go, i was actually looking for super-x and not the 555 pack as "super-x" is (marketed anyway) as the better item.

Hi all, I've put around 650 rds of federal target grade through my new 15/22 with only one ftf.(Dud)
Around 600 cci minimags with NO problems at all.
However, Winchester bulk 333's were stovepiping at a rate of one per every eight shots.:(
Finished the box and I won't be buying that one again.

Cabela,s has them. $19.99 per box of 375 .Part # on box says 0953-1500. the Cabela's parts # is 03130157

Crapola

I bought a 50 round box of Winchester Supreme Xpediter 1640fps 32 gr plated HP at WW for $6.47. Loaded up a 25 rounder and stopped at 20 rounds because:
6 failed to extract due to low power. They actually went pop and even tho there was a hole in the target, I removed the bolt to make sure there wasn't a bullet lodged in the barrel:eek:
2 failed to fire with good strikes
1 failed to feed
1 went whoosh. My targets are old pizza boxes and I heard a slap. When I inspected, The cardboard had a slight indentation and the bullet was laying on a screen I placed there to see if bullets were not penetrating the firewood pile backstop.

No Info?

I saw the same episode and was wondering the same thing. I went to CCI's web site and found no mention of them, unless they just haven't updated the site yet. The nose of the bullet had a slightly different shape to ensure reliable feeding. As I recall they were standard velocity also.

ammo

Has any one tried the CCI Blazer. I `ve been shooting The 550 bulk Fed and CCI mini mag. Like the mini mag but a little expensive. 550 Fed leaving gun real dirty.I see the CCI Blazer in bulk for about the same price.
