Ammo thoughts

They are not shooting it because they figure ( with some justification ) that every case they buy could be the last they will be able to get. One or more ammo plants going out of business is a real possibility. Not because of lack of customers, but because tha banks, credit card companies, and insurance carriers are under tremendous pressure from the " woke " crowd and
tech giants to stop doing business with gun and ammo companies.
You can't run a business without insurance. If any of the financial institutions refuse to comply, those who threaten them have the money and political power to do damage through legislation or by boycotts.
Legislation is being drafted as I type this that will remove protections from frivolous lawsuits due to misuse of products against gun and ammo manufacturers. If these new laws are passed, mor enacted by executive order, all it would take is a lawsuit or two against a company to put it out of business.

I have to admit that this new strategy against the ammo and gun companies is quite brilliant in many ways. They have done permanent damage to the shooting sports, and pretty much shut down almost all recreational shooting for the forseeable future due to the overreaction to the China virus.

The days of relatively cheap ammo are over.

Let's see, in this thread we've managed to blame Boomers, Millennials, New Gun Owners, Existing Gun Owners, Flippers, Hoarders, the Ammo Companies, the Gun Companies and the Government. So why not add the "Woke" crowd, the Banks and the Insurance Industry? Oh, and we can lump in the "China Virus" along with everyone else, because why not?

It's not just demand. I do think the supply was reduced due to production slow downs from covid. It seems everything else is in short supply too. Lumber. Pickup Trucks. Ketchup.

Cast bullets are also hard to get and that market is pretty independent from the rest of the Ammunition Industrial Complex. They must be in on the conspiracy too...? Yeah I don't think so.

I get the sense things are fixing to start easing up some. Prices are very slowly inching back down, while at the same time beginning to see some variety in brand choice (and name brands, not just 10 varieties of Russian steel-cased, and a bunch of stuff we never heard of before 2020).

I looked at a recent email from somewhere I occasionally shopped at, they had Sellier & Bellot, Aguila, in addition to the usual suspects. Price for 9mm was somewhere around $30 a box of 50, so $600 a case. That is still way too high, but it was S&B brass, not Tula steel (which had been even higher not that long ago).
Steel-cased 7.62x39 is back below $400 again.

Increased variety means, to me, increased shipping from several manufacturers. Prices slowly sliding means things are still moving, but starting to slow just a hair.

It's going to take awhile, probably well into 2022, but sooner or later the big rush to buy will end, and the dealers will get caught with stuff backed up in their warehouses. They'll have to move that one way or the other, to keep money flowing.

Ya'know around here the bar is set fairly high for "personal integrity." If'n you were to produce ammo from a "personal factory distributor source" and charged a premium you might get by. Advertising you "stalk the Academy truck" at O'dark thirty to flip it to latecomers.....well......I got nuthin.' Joe

LOL who are you trying to fool? There is 0 integrity here and filled with hypocrites. Just go to the classified section there endless ads for guys that paid $100-$200 for a handgun selling them for 1k-2k.
ALL taking advantage of people and the situation. Your friends with 'integrity' make me look like a Boy Scout- nice try.

Much of the worlds lead is now mined in China. We have to get it here along with tin and antimony before you can cast with it.

I watch Ammoseek and yesterday one business had ammo stock and quickly sold out. Checked mid-morning today still out. At 1:00 PM central time they had more stock.

CCI is apparently shipping, at least small units are hitting the retail market. But who knows when these items were ordered??

Walmart this evening had some federal 450 bushmaster ammo,26.72 a box of 20 ,limit 3.I don't own one lol.Have seen some cci,it don't last long

Once more: IT'S A FAKE SHORTAGE.... DON'T BUY

If you run out of ammo: DON'T SHOOT..... DISCIPLINE

IMHO again,
J.
Lol ok fake shortage. Why are all the shelves bare?
You say if you run out of ammo don't shoot? Don't worry they can't. SMH

Prices are simply crazy right now, who, why, I dunno...

I've always tried to be well stocked with ammo, ever since I began shooting back in the early 70's.

I haven't bought any ammo in quite a while, not been shooting much the past few years and now I really don't want to because I will not pay today's prices for ammo.

I have 40,000+ rounds, I've always tried to keep around 500 rounds a weapon....I'm good.

You cannot blame "new shooters" -- we want more shooters to keep our freedoms and our gun industry strong.
You cannot blame the "hoarders" because they are only trying to protect themselves and their families from the coming Zombie Apocalypse.
You can blame the political climate and those who are causing this shortage. Those that seek to destroy our 2A and our freedoms are the root cause of this political climate. Only by changing the players in this political climate will NORMAL happen...and the shortages end.

Should have.Dont know a soul that owns a 450.Made several calls to friends, but nobody needed any. Most already loaded up at a lot higher prices
I buy ammo all the time for firearms I don't have. I sell it for inflated prices to LGS's and sell/trade it for inflated prices/values at gun shows.
For example if its really 9mm your after buy the 3 boxes of 450 for $27ea and trade it for 3 or 4 boxes of 9MM at the gun show or a gun store.

You are actually quite correct. Except for the gun and ammo companies, I think.
We will be able to add credit card companies to the list soon.
We could probably add a couple more, too, since there is plenty of blame to go around.

In my opinion, It's a 3-fold issue...

Hoarders: People that think that since firearms are protected by the 2nd, and ammunition is not, the government is going to try to outlaw ammo, and, I better buy all I can find...

Resellers: Enough said... Some people would sell .22 LR ammo to their mother for the rock-bottom price of $5.00 a round...

New Shooters: Depending on the story you read, there were somewhere between 5,000,000 and 10,000,000 new firearm owners last year... If each of them wants a few boxes of FMJ to practice with, and a box of JHP for protection, that's 15,000,000 to 30,000,000 boxes of ammo that no one in 2019 could foresee bumping up production for...
The Second Amendment states ARMS, powder and shot is included, thus ammo ,look it up. Remember why one of the first shooting incidents of the Rev. War started, the Brits were going to Seize the powder and shot.

Went to Walmart yesterday to pick up some groceries, I always walk past the ammo area. I must have gotten there right after they put out the ammo, more there than I've seen in several months! Some 325/333 Fed & Win 22LR. 410, 16, 20 and 12 ga. shotshells (not a lot, but some of each). 30-30, 30-06, 308Win (only a few boxes of each). I was able to pick up 1 box Win 308, 325 box Federal and 333 box Win 22's. 3 box limit/day. Word must have spread while I was waiting for the girl behind the counter to get the keys, as there was a line behind me-all waiting for their turn at the counter.

As I said to the guy behind me, Walmart is the only place that is NOT gouging prices on ammo; still selling at the prices pre-pandemic! Wish they still sold handgun ammo :-(
