Annoyed at thread drift

I was sipping on a Bud, straight from the can, and realized I should post what was up on the Yolo on this date in 1945 for those that care. They've been off the beaches of Okinawa for a month now.

April 30, 1945

The red alert came at 0100 and dawn arrived before the all clear sounded. Radar contacts appeared but just as suddenly disappeared. Following breakfast all hands turned to and completed taking on stores by noon. Yolo remained near Azimech for the night. Mr. Kinley and I gave the men holiday routine. Moderate winds and seas prevailed until evening when fresh northerly winds created unfavorable conditions for small craft as well as the enemy. Nevertheless, GQ sounded just as the moon rose over the island. All hands were in a wretched frame of mind as they went to their stations. By midnight the word to secure was flashed and all hit the sack. We have learn¬ed the Japanese fly by the weather. Lousy weather enables the personnel to sleep.

The limited number of smoke craft available, the shifting of the wind when making smoke, the necessity of isolating ammunition vessels and the increased number of merchant vessels results in some ships receiving only limited smoke protection. On these occasions Yolo sends a smoke boat to rectify the situation. Some 30-50 LCIs, six LSMs, 23 or more LCVPs and all available LSTs smoke the anchorage when needed. Ships anchored at night in smoke, was found to be the best possible protection for them. As mentioned, providing smoke protection with Yolo's smoke boats is one of the ship's major missions.

A favorite of mine, SR 913 connects Miami to Key Biscayne. In the vicinity of Vizcaya and the Museum of Science a giant, rotating shark greeted travelers to the Rickenbacker Causeway. Over Bear Cut, a gap cut thru the ancient reef by a hurricane one could see the Seaquarium on the right or hang a left and snake a ways to the nude beach or hang out at Jimbo's, a crazy, colorful collection of shacks left over from the movie set of Island Claw produced by the great Bill Grefe (knew his daughters), hard along the shrimp docks. Moving along was the Crandon Park Zoo, now the Lipton Tennis complex, past the residential and resorts until reaching the Cape Florida lighthouse.

The first time I saw this, the brick was bare and the bottom 20 feet or so of the spiral wooden staircase was burnt away. Built in 1825 it was attacked by Seminole Indians in 1836. The keeper had gone to Key West leaving the assistant and his Negro helper. After exchanging fire the two took refuge in the lighthouse and were forced to the top when barrels of lamp oil stored in the base caught fire. Trapped at the top the men tossed a keg of gunpowder into the flames hoping for a quick end. The keg exploded extinguishing the flames, driving off the attackers and caught the attention of the schooner USN Motto 12 miles offshore. When the Navy arrived they found the helper, Carter dead from his wounds and the assistant keeper Thompson shot three times but alive.

Hey, Drifters! Any pagans out there should know what day tomorrow is.
Beltane.
Otherwise know as May Day.
One of the traditions of Beltane is a big bonfire.

So here ya go!

I'd like to dance around a bonfire tomorrow. But I think the Rain Gods have different plans for these here parts.

Night-night, Drifters. Sleep well.

Right before I met my soon to be wife, I met a coupla sisters that wanted to take me to a Beltane Celebration.
I asked what that was. They replied that they practice the fertility rights of spring.
I called it off with them when I met my future wife, then I found out what they really meant.
Talk about mixed feelings.

I have a relative who is a long-time Wiccan high priestess, so I know about Beltane, Samhain and Yule, if not all their other special days.

It's an interesting and apparently very benign religion.

My dancing days are done, but if I could have some marshmallows I'd be set...
