Anybody hungry?
And back to Homer Bast on the USS Yolo, on their way to Japan.
Coincidentally, as I read this about the end of WWII, the Tour de France on TV is showing a helicopter view of the Peloton riding along the Normandy landing beaches.
Bast's account of the storm that battered Yolo reminded me of what my dad said about crossing the North Atlantic in winter aboard an LST. Though a war correspondent, he assisted in censoring mail and spent some time on the bridge. He said that in a heavy sea you could see the flat-bottomed hull flex "like a snake".
Apparently an LST will roll on a wet Kleenex.
Isis hasn't been on the forum since 06-09-2016 at 09:47 PM.
I've been wondering about her. The only contact info she has is her PM box.
Rusty's been around, just not posting as much. He was last on the forum on 07-01-2016 at 09:56 PM.
Probably having some Independence Day fun.
I've gotten, what we used to call, "stupid air" on my mountain bike.I have flown many times with no airplane off the quad, four wheeler. Does that count?
Over the bars doing 2 1/2 ganors. The flight is in slow motion. I turned my head and seen the rear horizontal rack on the quad going verticle thinking oh boy this is gonna hurt. I did a face plant on the ice. The helmet and my new leather jacket saved me. I ripped my shoulder and broke ribs. My tee shirt bares to big "S" but I have flown under the radar many times.
The older Polaris quads had alumimum tie rod ends. I hit a pocket in the ice and the tie rod end broke. Funny the replacement is a steel tie rod end. I'd like to meet the engineer who designed it.
Dam train drivers.
Henry Ford wasn't a inteructural but the man was hands on smart. Where would we be today without him.
Just comparing hands on to college degrees.

July 3rd is a Very Depressing Day for me.
Today is my 3 Sisters Birthday. And my cousin Philip was also born today.
My oldest Sister (now gone) and my twin Sisters were also born today (one has passed away). Momma always said that was Jamie's birthday present that year, twin sisters. And my cousin that passed away in June of last year was my best friend! And we helped raise him. He was more like a little brother I never had. We did everything together. He was retired and Loved going on car/truck hunting trips with me. We had a blast! And he was only 56 and died from a heart attack. But he passed away in his sleep and didn't suffer. I miss them all! All three are buried in the same family cemetery. Along with our Grandparents and aunts, uncles and more cousins ETC. And there is NO way I could go there today. But I know they're all at peace now and in a better place!
People always found it strange when we told them I had three sisters born on the same day. Then we'd have to explain one older sister and a set of twin sisters. It was weird? And then throw in Philip, our 1st cousin also. That we helped raise. Really strange.
It used to be a BIG Day of celebration. When I was young, the entire family would get together and celebrate they're birthdays and the 4th all in one. But now it's just kind'a depressing.
But all of them wouldn't want me to be sad. They would want me to Celebrate They're Life's!
And Philip was a smoker and every now and then, out of the blue, I smell cigarette smoke. And NO one in my family smokes! I figure it's his way of telling me he's still around?
Bummer!
The rest of the world is free today because of the United States.
How soon they forget. It was our people and our industrial might that fed the world munittions.
Winning the war and winning peace are different things... As I recently explained to a young lady half my age.
Tomorrow's gonna suck.
Supposed to be cool and rainy all day.
Wife's gonna be at work.
Well, I guess I can get started on that leather belt pouch I've been wanting to make for my camera.

The Yolo was pretty much state-of-the-art LST at the time. LSTs had no keel and used ballast tanks for fine tuning. They would pitch and roll. According to one Lt(jg) that stood watch as OOD (also referred to as the Navigation Officer) during the storm... 'We had two Quonset huts on the deck. I could look out from the Bridge and those huts combined with the flex of the ship looked like a caterpillar creeping along.
