I want to first state that I love the original m&p line of pistols. I currently have a full size 9mm m&p, a pro series 40 m&p and now a new owner of a shield M&P 40. I also had a 40 M&P compact and a body guard 380.

I am starting to wonder about the quality of products that smith and wesson is currently producing. The last three hand guns I have purchased have had to be returned for repairs. The first gun to be repaired was a body guard 380. I was shooting the gun at the range into the third clip and the take down pin came flying out the slide was halfway off the frame and there was a bullet in the barrel. That gun I returned to gander mountain for a full refund. After that I replaced the 380 with a ruger lcp 380 and no problems to this day. The second gun I recently purchased was a M&P 40 pro series. The trigger was the worst trigger I have ever pulled. The trigger was very gritty. I even put a good 600 rounds through it to see if it would get better with no luck. I sent the pro series back and now its much better. My latest purchase was a M&P 40 shield. I have the famous mag drop problem on the extended mag when firing. I sent the gun back to smith and wesson . I received the gun here recently with a letter that stated that it now meets their specifications and was test fired. The gun could not have been range tested. I loaded my first clip racked the slide and guess what extended mag came out just from loading the gun. I still took the gun to the range and I only shot one clip and dropped at least 3 from the first clip. Im very disappointed and dont have much confidence in the gun now. I think the current quality control sucks at smith and wesson. BUYER BEWARE OF M&P SHIELD 40CAL. I WILL NOT RECOMMEND THIS GUN TO ANYONE!

A mere 3K rounds through mine and I couldnt pay it to drop a mag. You guys must not be talking dirty enough to it, lol

I own both the 9mm and the .40 and honestly have just as many rounds through both of them and have never had a problem.

They should fix it at their cost, including shipping. Keep sending it back until it is fixed. Best not to sell it or trade it without full disclosure of the issue to the next buyer.

Just another reason to not trust S&W's repair quality and the Shield 40's reliability. We all know not all Shield 40's are having the mag drop issues. But some Shield 40 owners, that never had a problem, are reporting they are having mag drop issue after firing 400 or more rounds. This problem of Shield 40 mag drops has been around since late May. They should have the fix completed by now. You get the repaired gun back and it still drops the mag. How hard can it be to "test" the gun before returning it.

Smith is setting itself up for a large class action lawsuit. This should be a simple solution, but it has been "band aided" for too long. A new deeper holding mag catch release would solve the problem, but most get "dimpled" mags.

I'll buy it from the OP for $100, since there seems to be a malfunction with it. It's a win/win situation for both of us, IMO.

After having my gun for a couple of weeks and now having to ship it back again Im very pissed and disappointed. It should have been fixed the first time. The other question I have is what if I want an extra extended mag will it work or does it have to be fixed as well?

I have the opposite problem with my FS 9. It will not reliably drop the mags free when I hit the button. My VTAC on the other hand drops free every time. Is this a problem a lot of people have had an what's the fix?

who knows smith and wesson cant fix them at this point.

I feel your pain. I had frustration with my Kahr CM9 and Beretta Nano.

My Shield 9 mm has been flawless and based on reports of magazine problems with some Shield 40 caliber owners it is enough of a problem for me to stay clear.

Thank you for your post. Yes, it stinks for those stuck with a problem child but at least for those who follow these forums they have been warned.

If anyone buys a Beretta Nano or Kahr CM9 you have been warned neither for me were as reliable as my Shield 9mm.

I have learned never to buy any firearm before searching gun forums. I place more trust on opinions like yours over a gun magazine which relies on ad space to pay the bills.

Just shipped the shield back for the second time. I will post results when I get the gun back. I was told they may make me a new frame. I was also assured they would move quickly on getting it fixed for me. we will see.

Good to read that they said they would expedite turn-around time for you, but this kinda reminds me...
Since many Service facilities close for a week or two around the X-Mas/New Year Holiday (I don't know if S&W Service does), it may be well worth asking about Holiday Turn-Around time before sending any products in for service. It may simply mean the difference between Knowing their pistol may have an extended Time Away and waiting until after the holidays to send it in.
Jus sayin' ;)

Heck with new frame. Tell them you want the Shield 9mm.

I thought about that ,but I really want the 40 if they can make it work. As soon as I get it back I will be shooting at least 200 rounds through it right away.

I haven't had an issue with mine, that said when I insert the mag I hear a very positive click, you can feel the mag release push out significantly on e the mag catches the release... Same with the other .40 shield that is in the family.... 2 .40 shields, ZERO issues, not to say they don't exist. I believe it's a problem with a few shields, but Internet hysteria blows it out of proportion (people complain when they get a lemon, they're quiet when they get a product that works) and I do believe many of the drop may issues are indeed user induced (thumbs forward is easy to hit mag release or slide stop).

no way I have shot many guns . I even double checked to make sure I was no where near the mag release. I racked the gun and it came out after they repaired it. Its for sure a manufacture defect.

It could be because you're loading clips instead of magazines. :-D
Good one there, nomenclature does mean something I have never seen a clip for any M&P or most pistols for that matter but if I wanted a "Clip" I would have to order a magazine!

A clip also called a stripper is mostly used for rifles and then it is used to load the MAGAZINE that actually feeds the chamber with live rounds. It is common but wrong nonetheless to refer to a magazine as a clip!
